Raiders roll to Saturday afternoon sweep over UMBC

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team hit a collective .364 on Saturday afternoon as the Raiders swept through visiting UMBC as part of Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational action inside McLin Gymnasium.
 
Wright State (4-1) closes weekend action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest against Bowling Green.

On Saturday, the Raiders turned in set hitting percentages of .323, .406 and .360 on the way to 25-15, 25-17 and 25-17 set scores, with seven different players getting in on the offensive action and recording at least one kill. Wright State was active at the net, turning away nine blocks over the course of the afternoon and forcing UMBC (0-5) into a .092 hitting percentage for the match.
 
Mya Ayro continued her hot start to the season with a match-best 13 kills and Sam Ott added 12 kills of her own, while Haley Robinson finished the win with five of Wright State's nine blocks in her collegiate debut. Lauren Yacobucci passed out 29 of the Raiders' 38 assists and added six digs as both Jenny Wessling (13) and Jenny Morey (11) collected double-digit digs.
 
Wright State turned in 12 aces at the service line from five different players, with Wessling leading the way with four aces, as Reilly Zegunis added three of her own, Ott and Morey had two each and Yacobucci tacked on one ace.
 
SET ONE
After UMBC tallied the first three points of the match, the Raiders took control from there and didn't look back, first with a five-point run to gain the advantage behind three Ayro kills and a pair of aces from Zegunis. Wright State later went on an 8-2 run aided by five UMBC errors and closed the set with another 8-2 run thanks to kills from Ayro, Robinson and Zegunis and capped by a Morey ace.
 
SET TWO
Wright State scored nine of the first 12 points in the set behind kills from five different players only to see UMBC pull even at 12-all thanks to an 8-2 run by the visitors. The Raiders responded with six straight points, including three aces in a row from Wessling, to regain control, closing the set moments later with kills from Zegunis and Yacobucci.
 
SET THREE
Similar to set two, the Raiders opened the set with seven of the first 10 points, aided by six UMBC errors, before a 6-1 run thanks to kills from Ayro and Ott pushed Wright State to a 15-7 lead. UMBC put together a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to pull within four points but never got any closer, as the Raiders closed the match with three final kills from Ayro down the stretch.
