Amaya Staton Matches Program Game High Blocks in Win Over Youngstown State

DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball team added their second Horizon League win, taking Youngstown State 77-62 on Sunday. Amaya Staton led the team with her fifth double-double of the season, recording 14 points and a career best 16 rebounds. Staton also led the team with a career best seven blocks, matching the program game-best of over 40 years, previously set by Christi Hill against Georgetown on January 16, 1982.
 
Wright State (4-14, 2-6 HL) finished shooting 44.4 percent overall from the floor, going 7-of-14 from three, and 81.5 percent on the line.
 
Joining Staton in the double-figure scoring was Abbie Riddle, tallying a career best 11 points while going four-of-five from the floor and two-of-two behind the arc. Henson and Miller also saw double-digit scoring, each adding ten points for the Raiders. Lauren Scott ended the day with nine points, followed by Olivia Brown with eight points, a career best, and Macie Taylor with seven points. Brown led the team with five assists, followed by Chloe Chard-Peloquin and Taylor with two each.
 
Following Staton's 16 rebounds was Henson with six, and Taylor with four. Brown led the team with a career best four steals, followed by Miller and Taylor with one each.
 
The Raiders were down 20-12 after the first quarter, being held to shooting 26.7 percent from the floor as the Penguins shot 35.7 percent. Miller led the team in the first quarter, tallying eight points while going two-of-two from behind the arc.
 
Wright State tied the score at 34 after the second, shooting 46.2 percent overall and three-for-three from behind the three-point arc while going seven-of-eight on the line, while the Raider's defense held YSU to shooting 26.3 percent from the floor. WSU saw their best scoring run of the half with four minutes remaining, made up by a three from Riddle, two free throws by Chard Peloquin, and a layup by Brown. The period stayed close, with 11 lead changes and four tied scores. With 17 seconds left in the half, YSU sunk a jumper from three, taking the lead 34-32, but Riddle tied the game at 34 with a jumper in the paint with three just seconds on the clock.
 
The Raiders outscored YSU 24-15 in the third, led by Henson with seven points. WSU held a 12-point lead with under a minute remaining, going on an 11-point run over three minutes. The run was made up by a jumper by Miller, followed by Riddle's second three of the day, then another Raider three coming from Rylee Sagester. Sagester followed with a driving layup, before Staton made it 12 with a shot on the line, 58-46.
 
Wright State continued their lead in the final quarter, outscoring the 'Guins 19-13. Staton led the team with seven points, going two-of-four from the floor and three-of-five on the line while grabbing seven off the backboard. Scott followed, adding six points for the Raiders. WSU maintained a double-digit lead over YSU for most of the final quarter, reaching a ten-point advantage with a Staton layup just over a minute into the period. The Raiders held the double-digit lead, only slipping briefly with just under five minutes as YSU put up a layup. WSU quickly took the lead back to ten with shots on the line by Staton. Wright State's largest lead came as the final scoring play, with Taylor sinking two on the line to end the day 77-62.
 
Youngstown State (7-10, 2-5 HL) ended the day shooting 32.8 percent from the floor, 26.1 from three, and went 14-of-15 on the line. Three Penguins saw double-figure statistics, led by Malia Magestro with 16 points, followed by Jewel Watkins with 13 points, and Haley Thierry with 12 points. Sophia Gregory led the team in rebounding, grabbing eight on the day.
