Staton Sees Sixth Season Double-Double in 69-61 Win Over Milwaukee

DAYTONAmaya Staton tallied her sixth season double-double as the Wright State women's basketball team defeated Milwaukee 69-61 on Saturday evening.
 
Wright State (5-16, 3-8 HL) ended the day shooting 39.3 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from three. Staton led the team with a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Makiya Miller joined in the double-figure scoring with 11 points. Claire Henson and Laruen Scott added nine points each, followed by Macie Taylor with eight points and Abbie Riddle with seven.
 
Following Staton's 12 rebounds was Miller with seven, Riddle with six, and Chloe Chard Peloquin with five. Henson led the team with three steals, followed by Olivia Brown, Chard Peloquin, and Scott with two each.
 
Milwaukee opened the day with a 5-0 advantage after the first 90 seconds, their only time with the lead on the day. Henson put up back-to-back jumpers, lowering MKE's lead to one, 5-4, before Miller drew a foul to go 2-of-2 on the line, tying the score at five before taking the lead 6-5. WSU maintained the advantage as Miller led the team in scoring in the first period, sinking two free throws and a three, while Scott and Henson closely trailed with four points each.
 
Wright State continued into the second, tallying 19 points while holding the Panthers to shooting 2-of-15 from the floor. MKE opened the period tying the score at 18 with free throws before Henson sunk a jumper from outside the arc, followed by a Staton layup, regaining the advantage 23-18. The Panthers tied the score again at 23 before WSU went on a 12-3 run to take a nine-point lead with 1:36 remaining in the half. The run was made up by a layup and three by Scott, an and-one jumper by Riddle, and a layup and two free throws from Taylor. MKE went four-of-four on the line while Staton added a layup, lowering WSU's advantage to seven at the half, 37-30.
 
The Panthers bested Wright State in the third, outscoring WSU 17-14 as the Raiders shot 35.3 percent from the floor in the period. Chard Peloquin and Staton each added four points for the Raiders, while Miller and Rylee Sagester sunk a three each. At the end of the quarter, Milwaukee had lowered WSU's advantage to four, 51-47.
 
The Raiders persevered, shooting 4-of-12 from the floor and 10-of-15 on the line in the final quarter, outscoring MKE 18-14. Staton led the quarter with five points, sinking a layup and shooting three-of-four on the line, while grabbing five off the backboard. Taylor followed with four points, made up of a layup and two free throws. Brown and Henson each put up a jumper, while Miller and Riddle combined for five points on the line, ending the day with a 69-61 over the Panthers.
 
Milwaukee (4-18, 1-10 HL) ended the day shooting 32.7 percent from the floor, 26.1 from three, and 90.5 on the free throw line. Kacee Baumhower led the Panthers with 13 points, followed by Payton Rechlicz with 11 points. MKE ended the day with 41 rebounds, led by Jorey Buwalda with nine.
