DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball team had four players reach double-figure scoring in a 75-67 against Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
Wright State (6-17, 4-9 HL) ended the day shooting 45 percent overall the from the floor, going 18-of-21 on the free throw line.
Amaya Staton led the team with her seventh double-double of the season, tallying 16 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. Joining in the double-digits were
Macie Taylor with 13 points,
Lauren Scott with 12 points, and
Makiya Miller with 11 points.
Rylee Sagester added nine points for the Raiders, followed by
Chloe Chard Peloquin with eight, and
Claire Henson with six.
Olivia Brown led the team adding five of WSU's ten assists.
Following Staton's 13 rebounds was Taylor with five and Henson with four. Staton ended the day with three blocks, while Miller added one. Miller and Chard Peloquin each had two steals, while Henson and Staton had one each.
The Raiders held an early advantage, taking a 24-12 lead after the first. Chard Peloquin and Staton led the quarter, each tallying eight points. Wright State opened the game with a 9-2 run, made up of three layups by Staton and a three-pointer by Sagester. After an NKU turnaround jumper in the paint, Chard Peloquin put up back-to-back layups followed by a jumper by Scott to take a nine-point lead, 15-6. Staton continued the run after the first-quarter media timeout, adding a jumper in the paint, 17-6. With under two minutes in the quarter, Taylor sunk a driving layup, drawing a foul to make it a three-point play, raising the lead to 11, 20-9. The Norse answered, bringing the advantage back to single digits with a second chance jump shot in the paint. Chard Peloquin reacted with a jumper in the paint, regaining WSU's double-digit lead with a minute remaining, 22-11. After an NKU free throw, Chard Peloquin put up a layup for the final points of the quarter, 24-12.
The Raider's lead continued through the second, as Staton reached a double-double with a team leading 12 points and 10 rebounds after the second quarter. WSU saw their largest lead of the game just 20 seconds into the second quarter with a Taylor driving layup making it a 14-point lead, 26-12. NKU reacted, lowering the advantage to nine with a jumper in the paint and a three-pointer, 26-17. Staton and Sagester put up shots inside the arc while the Norse sunk a layup, drawing a foul to make it three, making the score 30-20 at the media timeout. The Raiders raised the lead back to 14 with a three by Scott followed by a free throw by Henson, 34-20. NKU added a layup and jumper, while WSU had a hook shot by Taylor and two free throws by Staton, 38-24. The Norse added the final points of the half with a three pointer, 38-27.
NKU outscored the Raiders 21-17 in the third, shooting 44.4 percent while holding WSU to shooting 36.4 percent. Miller led the team in the period with five points, followed by Staton and Taylor with four points each. Taylor led the team in rebounds in the third quarter, grabbing four off the backboard. The Norse were quick to bring WSU's lead down to single digits after the halftime break, opening the third quarter with three layups to WSU's one by Staton, 40-33. Staton added another layup after a Norse three-pointer, 42-36, as Miller followed, drawing a shooting foul to go 2-of-2 on the line, 44-36. The game stayed close as NKU lowered WSU's advantage to one possession with under two minutes in the quarter, 50-48. Miller and Sagester combined for three points on the line while Scott put up a layup at the buzzer, ending the quarter 55-48.
The final quarter was the closest of the game, as WSU outscored the Norse by just one, 20-19. Miller led the quarter with six points, shooting 4-of-4 on the line, closely trailed by Henson and Scott with five points each. NKU opened the quarter with a three-pointer and jumper from outside the paint, 55-53. The Raiders answered with jump shots from Henson and Scott, and a three-pointer by Scott, holding a 62-55 advantage with just over seven minutes remaining. Sagester quickly answered a Norse layup, sinking one of her own, followed by a Henson free throw, 65-57. WSU saw a brief ten-point led with layups by Henson and Taylor with just under three minutes, 71-61, before NKU lowered the lead to seven with a three-point jumper, 71-64. The game stayed scoreless until under a minute as Miller drew a foul to put WSU in the bonus, shooting two-of-two. NKU took possession, sinking a second-chance three, before Miller again went two-of-two on the line, ending the day 75-67.
Northern Kentucky (8-16, 5-8 HL) ended the day shooting 42.2 percent overall, 28.6 percent from three, and went 7-of-10 on the free throw line. Macey Blevins led the team with 24 points and six rebounds, followed by Mya Meredith with 16 points. Meredith led the Norse alongside Anna Hamilton, each recording two steals.
The Raiders will stay home to take on IU Indy on Wednesday, February 5. The game is set for a 7 p.m. tip off and with stream on ESPN+.
