HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kentucky – Overcoming a 16-point deficit, the Wright State women's basketball team defeated Northern Kentucky 68-62 on Saturday afternoon. Four Raiders scored in double figures to lead the team to their third consecutive win.
Wright State (9-19, 7-11 HL) shot 41.1 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from three, and 76.5 percent at the free-throw line.
Makiya Miller paced the Raiders with 14 points, while
Amaya Staton added 12.
Ellie Magestro-Kennedy and
Macie Taylor joined in the double-digit scoring, adding 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Claire Henson added nine points for the Raiders, leading the team with five assists. Staton recorded her 12th double-double of the season, grabbing a team-leading 13 rebounds.
The Raiders were down 34-25 at the half, shooting 36 percent overall while the Norse shot 48.1 percent. The Norse led 14-11 after the first quarter and extended their advantage to 10 early in the second. They pushed the lead to 12 with just over three minutes left in the half. Staton led the team in scoring at the half, tallying six points, closely followed by Miller with five. Henson and Staton combined for eight of the Raiders' 15 rebounds in the first, grabbing four each.
After the halftime break, NKU went on a 9-2 run, only interrupted by a Henson fast break layup, taking a 16-point lead before the third quarter media timeout, 43-27. The Raiders began their comeback coming out of the media timeout, putting up four three-point jumpers, two by Miller and one each by Magestro-Kennedy and Taylor, lowering the Norse lead to seven, 46-39.
Olivia Brown answered a Norse layup with a driving layup, followed by Magestro-Kennedy's second three of the quarter, 48-44.
WSU outscored the Norse 24-12 in the final quarter, shooting 58.3 percent from the floor. Staton led the team with six points, followed by Magestro-Kennedy and Taylor with five points each. After a Miller free throw, NKU opened the final quarter with three layups, with a Magestro-Kennedy three-pointer in between, making it 56-48. After a Henson turnaround jumper, the Norse hit both free throws to maintain an eight-point lead, 58-50. Taylor drilled a three, followed by a
Chloe Chard Peloquin jumper and a Miller layup, cutting the deficit to 59-57. NKU responded with a three, but free throws and two layups by Staton gave WSU a 63-62 lead with under a minute remaining. The Raiders secured the win with free throws by Henson, Magestro-Kennedy, and Taylor, ending the day 68-62.
Northern Kentucky finished shooting 46 percent overall, 35 percent from three, and 52.9 percent on the line. Three Norse scored in double figures, as Macey Blevins led the team with 17 points. Mya Meredith and Halle Idowu followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Abby Wolterman led the team in rebounding, grabbing 13 off the backboard.
The Raiders will stay on the road, traveling to Cleveland State on Wednesday, February 26, for a 7 p.m. game. Fans can keep up with the action through live stats and the ESPN+ livestream.
