DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team remains unbeaten at home, securing a 6-1 victory over Toledo on Tuesday afternoon. The Raiders will continue Horizon League play on the road with a three-game series at Milwaukee, beginning Friday, March 21, at 4 p.m. ET. Games one and two will stream on ESPN+, with live stats available for all three games.
Wright State (9-9) finished with six runs on five hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts.
Boston Smith led the team with two hits, two walks, and two RBI.
Conlan Daniel,
Dane Thomas, and
Hunter Warren each had one hit, while
Luke Arnold,
Patrick Fultz, and Warren drove in one run apiece.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the first when Smith drew a walk, advanced on groundouts by Warren and Fultz, and scored on a passed ball, making it 1-0. Toledo tied the game at one in the fourth, scoring on an error.
After a one-two-three bottom of the fourth, Wright State regained the lead 3-1 in the fifth. The first run came as Daniel reached on a single, stealing second and advancing to third on a Thomas single. Thomas stole second before Arnold lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Daniel home, making it 2-1. Thomas moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Smith single to right field, 3-1.
WSU capped the scoring with three runs in the seventh. Manley and Daniel walked to open the inning, then advanced on steals before Arnold also drew a walk. Smith singled to center, allowing Manley to score, 4-1. Warren followed, being walked to send Daniel across home plate, 5-1. The final run of the day came as Fultz reached on a fielding error, allowing Arnold to score, 6-1.
Starting pitcher
Brayden Schoetzow (1-0) earned the win, tossing 2.1 hitless, scoreless innings. Schoetzow struck out two batters while walking one.
J.J. Thompson entered in the third, allowing one unearned run on two hits, with one walk and one strikeout over 2.2 innings.
Chet Lax closed the day, pitching the final two innings, allowing no runs or hits with one strikeout and a walk.
The Rockets (6-13) managed just one run on three hits while drawing five walks and striking out five times. Luke Walton led the team with a double, while Leto drove in the only run, reaching on an error. Toledo starting pitcher Brady Sasse (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout over 4.1 innings.
