DAYTON –
Amaya Staton had a record-breaking night as the Wright State women's basketball team defeated Youngstown State 73-58 in the first round of the 2025 Barbasol Horizon League Championship. With 27 rebounds, Staton broke the WSU program record, the HL Championship record, and the 2025 NCAA Division I single-game rebounding record. She also matched the HL all-time single-game rebounding record.
The Raiders advance to a tournament quarterfinals matchup on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. ET.
Wright State (10-21) finished shooting 42.6 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three, and 84.6 percent on the free throw line. In addition to her record-breaking rebounding, Staton led the team with 17 points, tallying her ninth double-double of the season.
Claire Henson and
Lauren Scott joined in the double-figure scoring, recording 12 and 10 points each.
Makiya Miller added nine points for the Raiders, while Ryle Sagester and
Macie Taylor added eight each. Henson led the team with four assists, followed by
Olivia Brown with three.
Wright State recorded four blocks, with Staton contributing three and Miller adding one. Brown led the team in steals, with four on the evening, followed by Staton with two and Miller with one.
The Raiders opened with a 9-2 run made up by two Staton layups, a layup from Henson, and a three-pointer by Sagester as the Penguins put in two shots on the line. YSU lowered the lead to one with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter, 12-11. Taylor put up a three with less than a minute left. YSU responded with a layup, but a buzzer beating jumper outside the paint from Scott added a four-point buffer after the period, 17-13.
Staton reached double figures in rebounding in the first quarter, grabbing 11 boards—more than doubling YSU's total of five.
WSU went into the second quarter raising their advantage to double-digits with an 11-0 run in the first three minutes. The run began with three-pointers by Miller and Sagester, followed by a layup from Staton. Scott then added a fast-break jumper from deep, extending the lead to 28-13. The teams traded baskets in the next three minutes, with YSU outscoring WSU 11-4, as Miller added a layup and Sagester two free throws, 32-24. Wright State closed the second quarter with layups from Riddle and Staton, three-pointers from Ellie Magestero-Kennedy and Scott, and two free throws by Taylor to take a 44-28 lead into halftime.
The Penguins outscored WSU 18-10 in the third quarter, as Staton led the team with five points, followed by Henson with a jumper from deep and
Chloe Chard Peloquin with a layup. Staton grabbed eight rebounds in the third to sit just two rebounds away from the WSU program record of 25 rebounds in a game, set 50 years prior by Margie Coate against Ohio Wesleyan (February 1, 1975).
Wright State opened the final quarter with a 10-3 run, made up by a layup each from Henson, Scott, and Staton, a three by Taylor, and free throws by Henson and Miller, taking a 17-point lead, 66-49. YSU lowered the advantage to 11 with under three minutes remaining, but Henson sunk a layup and made it a three-point play at the line, 71-57. The Penguins put up one shot on the line, but
Olivia Brown scored the final points of the night with two free throws, 73-58.
Staton secured her final four rebounds in the closing minutes, grabbing one at the 2:15 mark. She tied the program record with 80 seconds left, then broke it just over a minute before the buzzer. With 30 seconds remaining, she collected her 27th board, matching the HL single-game record.
Youngstown State (12-19) finished shooting 40.4 percent from the floor, 36.4 percent from three, and 66.7 percent on the line. Three Penguins saw double-figure scoring, as Haley Thierry and Jewel Watkins added 14 points each, followed by Sophia Gregory with 13 points. The Penguins had 26 rebounds and four blocks, and Gregory led the team with nine rebounds and two blocks.
