DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team took the series opener against Purdue Fort Wayne, 4-3, on Friday afternoon thanks to a walk-off single by junior
Will Cook. The Raiders will continue the series on Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can catch the action in person with free admission or virtually via live stats and the ESPN+ livestream.
It was a cold Friday that got off to a slow start, with neither team scoring through the first four innings. Wright State broke through in the fifth, plating three runs.
Luke Arnold was hit by a pitch to bring home
Patrick Fultz, followed by RBI groundouts from
Will Cook and
Hunter Warren.
The Mastodons responded with a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, then tied the game at three in the ninth with a solo home run and a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth, Fultz doubled down the left field line,
Cam Gilkerson drew a walk, and
Braylen Blomquist laid down a bunt single to load the bases for Cook. On the first pitch he saw, Cook sent one to the warning track to walk it off for the Raiders.
Wright State is now 19-13 on the season and 11-2 in Horizon League play as
Warren Hartzell was awarded the win, throwing 2.0 innings and striking out three batters.
