WACO, Texas – Wright State baseball's Boston Smith has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Dick Howser Trophy Hitter of the Month, the organization announced Friday afternoon.
Â
Smith's performance in May was nothing short of extraordinary. A native of Arcanum, Ohio, he led Wright State to its seventh consecutive regular-season title, 10th Horizon League Championship, and 12th NCAA postseason appearance. He launched three home runs over four games in the NCAA Nashville Regional, helping lead the Raiders to a historic upset over No. 1 overall seed Vanderbilt on June 1.
Â
The senior catcher posted a .459 batting average in May (28-for-61) with 21 extra-base hits—comprised of four doubles, one triple, and 16 home runs. He recorded 37 RBI and 27 runs scored, drew 19 walks, struck out 12 times, stole five bases, and posted a 1.942 OPS. His 16 home runs not only stood out at the collegiate level but across all of baseball, surpassing MLB stars Shohei Ohtani (15) and Aaron Judge (11) during the same month. That total alone would rank fourth in Horizon League single-season history and seventh all-time in Wright State's program records.
Â
Smith closed out his senior season slashing .330/.498/.770 with 70 RBI and 69 hits, including 10 doubles, two triples, and a program-record 26 home runs—tied for most in the nation. Before postseason play began, he had already broken the Wright State single-season and career home run records and now holds the Horizon League single-season mark as well. Nationally, he ranks in the top 10 in home runs per game (2nd, 0.44), slugging percentage (7th, .770), and walks (9th, 57).
Â
Across four seasons—three of them as a Raider—Smith compiled a .298 career batting average with 175 hits, 51 home runs, and 157 RBI.
