INDIANAPOLIS/DAYTON – Wright State guard Solomon Callaghan and forward Kellen Pickett have swept the Horizon League weekly awards, earning HL Player and Freshman of the Week honors, the League office announced on Monday.
Â
Callaghan averaged 21 points for the week after a pair of double-digit scoring efforts, including a new career-high 27 points on Sunday over Oakland as Wright State tallied a pair of road wins to gain sole possession of first place in the HL standings. Callaghan opened his week with 15 points in the Friday win at Detroit Mercy, going 5-of-9 from the floor with a trio of triples, before turning in an 8-of-11 shooting effort with six three-pointers on Sunday for the 27 points. His six made threes on Sunday matches a career-best from two weeks ago in the first win over Oakland. Callaghan finished the weekend shooting 65 percent overall and 60 percent from deep on the way to his 21.0 points per game average, adding five assists and four rebounds to his weekly stat line. He also went a combined 7-of-7 at the free throw stripe to remain perfect from the line this season.
Â
Callaghan has recorded five straight double-digit scoring efforts after only scoring 10-plus points in three of the first 12 contests this season, coupling that scoring output with a 63 percent overall shooting mark over that same stretch.
Â
Pickett averaged a double-double for the weekend as he helped lead Wright State to a pair of road wins and sole possession of first place in the HL standings. He opened his weekend with a new career-high 12-rebound effort on Friday night at Detroit Mercy, including 11 on the defensive glass, as he added five points, two blocks, an assist and a steal in the win. Pickett followed that up with an 18-point performance on Sunday against Oakland, going 7-of-10 from the floor while grabbing 11 rebounds, all on the defensive end, for his second collegiate double-double to go along with three assists and two more blocks. For the weekend, Pickett shot 53 percent overall on the way to his 11.5 point, 11.5 rebound double-double average, playing over 35 minutes in Sunday's win after a 26-minute Friday output.
Â
Pickett has scored in 13 of 17 games in his freshman campaign, adding at least one rebound in 15 contests. In six games since being inserted into the starting lineup, he is shooting 61 percent overall while averaging more than 28 minutes of action per contest.
