Baseball Drops Finale 15-1 at #24 Miami (FL)

Coral Gables, FL -- For the third straight game the Wright State baseball team fell behind to host Miami (FL) early, surrendering eleven runs to the #24 Hurricanes in the first four innings, on their way to a 15-1 loss at Mark Light Field. The Raiders pitching staff walked five batters and gave up seven extra-base hits and striking out five batters in the finale.
The Hurricanes struck in the first inning when the first four batters of the inning reached base and three of the crossed the plate, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Jon Jay and an RBI single from Yonder Alonzo.
The first four batters reached base in the first inning for the Hurricanes, with three of the scoring, as Jon Jay slapped a two-RBI double to right center and Danny Valencia chipped in an RBI single to give UM an early 3-0 lead on WSU starter Chris Snyder.
The 'Canes added a run in the second on a Jemile Weeks sacrifice fly and then tacked on four more in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of designated hitter Eddie Rodriguez. Snyder's day ended after only 2.1 innings of work as he falls to 3-6 on the season, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits, while striking out two batters in the game.
Andrew Burns relieved Snyder in the third and loaded the bases before rolling a double-play ball to get out of the inning with the Raiders trailing 8-0. Nate Stevens came on to throw the fourth inning and surrendered three runs, only one earned, in an inning of work and Garret Holleran came on in the fifth to hold the 'Canes scoreless.
UM starter Manny Miguelez threw five complete innings, allowing only three hits, holding the Raiders scoreless in picking up his sixth win of the season.
The Raiders got on the board in the sixth inning when Dan Biedenharn led the inning off with a single to left field and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Biedenharn scored when Amin Abusaleh singled to right field, breaking up the shutout, for his second hit of the day.
Christian Koenig threw a scoreless sixth inning for the Green and Gold and Chris Coleman threw two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run in the seventh before Jason Bennion struck out the final batter of the inning.
Joe Smith came on to throw the eighth inning for the Raiders and allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out two batters in his 25th appearance of the season.
The Raiders mustered eight hits against the Hurricane duo of Miguelez and reliever Ricky Orta with Biedenharn and Abusaleh collecting two hits apiece and Justin Parker chipped in a two-out double in the fourth inning for the Raiders only extra-base hit of the game. Ross Oeder singled and reached base on the Raiders only walk of the game to hold his average at a team best .354.
The Raiders fall to 24-22 overall on the 2006 season and continue on their eight game road trip with a trip to Bowling Green on Wednesday, May 10. The Raiders and Falcons will square-off in a single game starting at 3:00
