DAYTON- The top-seeded Wright State baseball team opened Horizon League Baseball Championship play with a 7-5 comeback win over No. 5 Oakland Thursday afternoon.
Â
Wright State (26-26, 17-7) will remain in the winners' bracket and will face off against No. 2 Milwaukee Friday morning. First pitch Friday is now slated for 9 a.m. due to forecasted inclement weather.
Â
Cam Allen got the start on the mound for the Raiders and delivered the longest start of his collegiate career, pitching 8.2 innings. The right-hander pitched a career best 125 pitches, his third time passing the century mark this season. Allen worked in and out of trouble, allowing five runs (four earned), allowing nine hits and two walks, while striking out six batters.
Â
Oakland opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI groundout from Sam Griffith and an RBI single from Lucas Day.
Â
The Raiders would get one run back in the bottom of the first when Hunter Warren came in to score on an RBI groundout from Keegan Holmstrom.
Â
Oakland would extend its lead with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the third inning. Day would rip his second RBI single of the day through the right side, plating two runs before Aidan Schuck ripped an RBI single of his own through the left side, to give Oakland a 4-1 lead.
Â
Gus Gregory would kick off the Raiders' comeback with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. The junior would launch his seventh home run off the scoreboard to cut the deficit to two runs.
Â
The Raiders would come all the way back and take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first run of the frame would come courtesy of a Braylen Blomquist sacrifice fly. Andrew Duncan would rip a single out to left field that was bobbled by the Oakland defender, allowing Zac Butler to score from second base. Holmstrom would give the Raiders the lead when he laid a beautiful safety squeeze up the first baseline that scored Hunter Warren from third base.
Â
Wright State would add a run of insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning with another sacrifice bunt up the first base line this time from Patrick Fultz, scoring Cy Turner from third.
