DAYTON, OH - Greg Lovelady, an assistant coach for the past two seasons on the Wright State baseball staff, has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Raider head coach Rob Cooper announced today that, effective immediately, Lovelady will move into the position.
Lovelady has worked with the Raiders pitchers and catchers for the past two seasons and helped them return to the top of the Horizon League in many categories. The Raiders ranked second in ERA, strikeouts and batting average against last season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994.
"Coach Lovelady has been a great asset to this program and his winning attitude is contagious with our students," Cooper said. "His passion for the game is unmatched and his ability to work with our athletes make him a priceless part of our coaching staff, department and university. It's a well deserved promotion to a dedicated individual."
The former standout at Miami (FL) has also coached four players that have signed professional contracts, including 2006 draft pick Joe Smith. Lovelady has had two catchers and two pitchers sign with professional clubs, as catchers Aaron Garcia (NY Mets) and Bryan Vickers (Joliet Jackhammers) and pitchers Robert Barrett (Sioux Falls Canaries) and Smith (NY Mets) have all played beyond college.
Lovelady has also been the recruiting coordinator for the Green and Gold the past two seasons, helping the Raiders sign players from seven different states. The Raiders have amassed 58 wins over the past two seasons, the best two season span since the 1994-95 seasons.
Before joining the staff at Wright State, the former `Canes catcher was an assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons. As a coach, he helped develop two catchers and numerous pitchers into major league draft picks. Lovelady helped guide UM to two National Championships, in 1999 and '01, and was the team captain for their second championship run.
During his time at UM, Lovelady earned his bachelors degree in Finance, with a minor in sports management, and was a member of the university's deans list.
