Men Defeat Belmont in Overtime at Dr. Pepper Classic

Behind a 26-point effort from Todd Brown and double-double performances from Scottie Wilson and Jordan Pleiman, the Wright State men's basketball team defeated the Belmont Bruins 78-74 in overtime in the opening game of the Dr Pepper Classic in Chattanooga Saturday night.

Belmont led by five until WSU scored eight straight points, four of those coming from Todd Brown, to go up 20-17 with 9:18 remaining in the first half. The Bruins regained the advantage with a 7-0 burst, only to see the Raiders close the period with a 13-5 run to take a 33- 29 lead at the break.

Wright State was still up 59-55 with 1:12 remaining in regulation after two Pleiman free throws, but Belmont's Matthew Dotson followed with a three and Jordan Campbell forced overtime at 60-60 with a layup with three seconds left.

The game remained tied at 63 in overtime until the Raiders scored eight straight points, four each from Wilson and Vaughn Duggins. Belmont cut the deficit to 73-71 on a Justin Hare three with 24 seconds left, but WSU sealed the win with two Duggins foul shots and three by Wilson over the final 14 seconds.

The Raiders shot 49 percent for the game and hit 23 of 37 from the foul line while Belmont hit for 40 percent and was just 13 of 26 from the stripe. Wright State also held a 45-36 rebounding advantage and led in points in the paint (38-28), points off of turnovers (21-16) and second-chance points (12-8).

Brown finished with 26 points while Wilson posted a double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds, with 10 of those points coming in overtime. Pleiman also recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards while Duggins also had 14.

Shane Dansby and Justin Hare each had 13 to lead Belmont (7-6) while Dodson and Campbell added 12.

Wright State, now 7-3 on the season, will take on the Chattanooga/Murray State winner in the Dr Pepper Classic championship game Sunday at 8:00.
