The Wright State baseball team opened up their 2007 campaign with 3-2 loss to #24 Mississippi at Oxford-University Stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. The Green and Gold managed only three hits, but turned two double plays to keep the game close.
The Rebels struck with two runs in the third inning off of WSU starting pitcher Garret Holleran. The inning started when Jordan Henry singled and scored on a double off the bat of Brett Basham. Basham then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground out to give Ole Miss a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Green and Gold got their offense started when Brian Shoup led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Shoup advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by UM starter Will Kline.
The Raiders tied the game in the sixth inning when senior Ross Oeder took a Kline offering 379-feet over the left field fence. It was the first homer of the season for Oeder, who now has five career homers, and tied the game a 2-2.
With two outs and a runner on first in the seventh inning, Holleran was replaced by left-hander Jason Bennion. After a wild pitch moved the base runner to second, Bennion struck out Matt Smith to end the inning and the threat.
The line on Holleran was 6.2 innings of work in his first start of the season. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out two. He allowed two earned runs and didn't factor in the decision.
Bennion retired the first batter of the eighth inning and handed the ball to Erich Schanz. Schanz retired the next two batters on ground balls to Oeder at second to end the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Schanz surrendered a single to the lead of hitter and walked the next batter before Chris Nighland came on to relieve him. The next batter, Bret Basham, moved the runners to second and third and Nighland intentionally walked the next batter. On ball four, freshman catcher Gerald Ogrinc attempted to pick off the runner at third, the throw was errant and the winning run scampered home for the Rebels (6-1 overall).
Schanz (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he threw two-thirds of an inning and was responsible for the unearned run in the ninth. Nighland completed one-third of an inning and issued an intentional walk in his first action of the season.
In the game, Shoup collected two hits and scored a run while Oeder's longball was the only other hit for WSU. Oeder added a walk and Aaron Fields walked in his collegiate debut to round out the Raiders base runners.
The Raiders, 0-1 on the season, and Rebels will meet again tomorrow at Swayze Field for an afternoon matinee game starting at 2:30 Dayton time.
