The Wright State baseball team dropped their second straight contest, a 9-5 decision to Cincinnati at Marge Schott Stadium. The Raiders took an early lead on the host Bearcats, but six WSU pitchers issued seven walks and UC posted runs in five innings to defeat the Green and Gold.
Jeremy Hamilton continued battering opposing pitchers, getting the Raiders offense started in the first inning with a double off the center field wall. Hamilton advanced to third on a balk by UC starter John Baird and scored on an RBI single by Casey McGrew followed that with his first career home run, a 395 foot shot to left center field, to give WSU an early 3-0 lead.
Jordan Wolfe took the mound against the Bearcats in his first career start and after the lead-off batter reached on an error, the next three batters walked to push the first run across for UC. Wolfe then struck out a batter and then coaxed the following batter to pop out to first base, holding the Raiders lead at 3-1.
In the third inning, a record fell when senior Dan Biedenharn sacrifice bunt. The sacrifice hit was the tenth of the season for Biedenharn and the 31st of his career, passing Dan Bassler for the most sacrifice hits in a career at WSU.
After the sacrifice bunt, Hamilton was hit by a pitch and the two base runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. After a walk to Justin Parker loaded the bases, McGrew hit a sacrifice fly to right field to push WSU's lead to 4-1.
Wolfe lasted only two innings, allowing an unearned run and striking out two batters. The freshman walked three batters before giving way to Dan Barker to start the third inning.
Cincinnati got their offense started in the third inning as the first two batters walked and the next two singled to score a run and load the bases. With no one out and the bases full of Bearcats, Barker was replaced by junior Scott Ruthven. Two more runs scored in the inning, all charged to Barker, and the two teams were tied at four runs apiece.
Chris Nighland game on to start the fourth inning for the Raiders and threw a scoreless frame.
The Bearcats took a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning when Tony Campana tripled to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Harrison.
The Raiders evened the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning after Parker doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.
Cincinnati took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Cameron Satterwhite tied the game with a home run to start inning. After a single from Ryan Baker, Nighland (0-1) was replaced by Nate Stevens and the Bearcats added two more runs.
Jason Bennion threw the final 1 1/3 innings scoreless, extending his streak of scoreless innings to 12.2 innings this season.
Offensively for WSU, Parker collected two hits, drove in an RBI and scored a pair of runs, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. McGrew added three RBI's in the game, while Aaron Fields, Hamilton and Brian Shoup rounded out the hits for the Raiders offense.
Wright State falls to 10-9 overall this season and head into a pivotal weekend series with Horizon League foe Milwaukee this weekend. The Green and Gold will take on the Panthers in a single game on Friday evening at Nischwitz Stadium starting at 6:30.
