The Wright State baseball team fell behind early for the second straight game, before mounting a comeback to defeat crosstown rival Dayton 14-6. UD took a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning, but WSU outscored the Flyers 14-2 the remainder of the game to pull out the victory.
UD sent 10 batters to the plate against WSU starter Dan Barker and tallied four runs to open the game. The Flyers used three hits and a walk and a hit batsman to strike first in the high scoring affair.
The Raiders responded with five runs in the 37-minute long first inning to claim the lead at 5-4. Dan Biedenharn singled to put runners on the corners. Jeremy Hamilton then hit a sacrifice fly to score Oeder, driving in his 45th RBI of the season, and Casey McGrew then smacked a three-run home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 4-4. Brian Shoup then sent the next offering from Dayton starting pitcher Matt Speckman sailing over the fence in right field to give WSU a 5-4 advantage.
Dayton, now 17-26, tied the game in the second inning on a Jeff Mercer home run off of WSU relief pitcher Alex Kaminsky.
The Raiders would take the lead for good in the third inning when Shoup singled to start the inning. After a walk to Gerald Ogrinc, a double-steal moved the runners up and John Kopilchack's bunt single drove in Shoup from third.
Shoup struck again in the fourth inning when UD reliever Cale Ort hit Biedenharn to start the inning, walked Hamilton and Parker reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to load the bases. Shoup then sent the first offering from Ort over the scoreboard in right field for a grand slam. It was the first Raider grand slam since Justin Wilson hit one during the 2005 season to beat Akron at Nischwitz Stadium.
Kaminsky threw four solid innings in relief of Barker, allowing only one run on three hits. The freshman didn't walk a batter and struck out two on the way to his first career win as a Raider.
The Raiders added a pair of runs on a Sam Mote double in the sixth inning and capped the scoring in the eighth inning with Biedenharn and Hamilton each collecting RBI's.
Ross Vagedes, Nate Stevens, Chris Nighland and Jason Bennion each got an inning of work on the mound to close out the contest for WSU.
Shoup was three-for-four at the plate in the contest with a walk, four runs scored and a season-high five RBI's. McGrew drove in three runs, while Hamilton collected a pair of RBI's to push his league leading total to 46. Oeder collected a pair of hits, scoring twice, and Mote was two-for-two with a pair of RBI's.
The Raiders improve to 27-15 overall this season and will take on ACC foe Miami (FL) this weekend in a three-game series. The Green and Gold will kick the series with the Hurricanes off on Friday evening at 7:00 at Mark Light Field.
