The Wright State baseball team led most of the game, until a sixth inning, three run homer lifted Miami (FL) to a 3-2 victory. Seven different Raiders chipped in a hit and Erich Schanz threw six solid innings, but one swing of the bat for Jemile Weeks propelled UM to the win.
Ross Oeder led the game off with by swinging at the second pitch from UM starter John Maine. Oeder sent the pitch 365 feet over the left field fence for his fifth home run of the season.
The Raiders remained on top through five innings of play as WSU starter Erich Schanz worked in and out of trouble until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, the Hurricanes started the inning with a pair of one-out walks before Weeks put UM in the lead with his fifth home run of the season. Weeks hit a high fly ball that eked over the fence down the left field line to give the Canes a 3-1 lead.
Schanz threw six innings in the start and allowed the three runs on four hits. The right-hander issued six walks and struck out two batters to fall to 5-4 on the season.
After the first batter of the game went deep, Maine threw the next seven innings scoreless and struck out twelve Raider hitters.
Jason Bennion came on the throw the next inning and a third scoreless, striking out two batters, before handing the ball to Nate Stevens. Stevens struck out two batters and game up one hit in close out the eighth inning.
The Raiders mounted a comeback in the ninth inning against UM closer Danny Gil. Brian Shoup started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. Aaron Fields then singled through the left side of the infield to put runners on the corners and one out. Shoup scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2 before Gil recorded the final two outs.
The Raiders outhit the Canes 7-5 in the contest, but left eight runners stranded in the loss. Seven different Raiders collected hits and Oeder recorded a run scored and an RBI in the contest.
Wright State falls to 27-16 overall on the season and will take to the field against the Hurricanes on Saturday, May 5, at 7:00.
