Shey Peddy had 19 points and Whitney Lewis became the 16th Wright State player to reach the 1000-point plateau, but it wasn't enough as the UIC Flames opened up an 11-point second half lead and then held on for a 63-60 Horizon League women's basketball win at the UIC Pavilion Thursday night.
Neither team had more than a four-point advantage in the first half as the Raiders shot 54 percent from the field, including three of four from three-point range, while UIC was at 48 percent overall and three of eight from behind the arc.
Up 36-34 at the break, the Flames scored the first five points of the second half on a Briana Hinkle jumper and a Taylor Manley three. UIC maintained the lead from there and eventually extended it to 61-50 on a Manley jumper with 6:53 remaining.
WSU, however, answered with six straight points on layups from Sierra Crayton, Charne Dixon and Peddy and trimmed the deficit to three on a Dixon layup with 41 seconds left.
After forcing a turnover on UIC's next possession, the Raiders had one last chance, but LaShawna Thomas' three attempt in the final seconds from the right wing was short off the side of the rim.
The Raiders shot 50 percent from the field compared to 42 percent for the Flames, but UIC was eight of 19 from three-point range to Wright State's five of nine and made nine of 12 free throws while WSU was just five of eight. The Flames also led 19-9 in second-chance points as they held a 33-28 rebounding advantage, including 11-5 on the offensive end.
Peddy paced the Raiders with 19 points, 13 coming in the first half, and added five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Thomas added 10 points while Lewis and Crayton each had eight.
The eight points for Lewis give her exactly 1000 for her career as she becomes the 16th Raider all-time to reach the milestone.
Jessie Miller led UIC (7-12, 3-5 Horizon) with 19 points while Hinkle had 18, 14 in the first half, along with seven rebounds and four assists and Manley had 15, all but two coming after halftime.
Wright State, now 7-12 overall and 4-4 in the Horizon League, concludes its stay in the Windy City Saturday with a 5:00 Eastern matchup at Loyola.
