The Wright State women's basketball team was tied with Green Bay with 13 minutes to play, but the Phoenix outscored the Raiders 19-2 over an eight-minute span and went on to a 67-52 decision in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.
Both teams came out strong offensively as WSU took a 18-16 lead on a Whitney Lewis three just seven minutes into the contest. The Raider advantage grew to 24-18 following a LaShawna Thomas jumper at the 6:17 mark, only to see Green Bay eventually tied the game at 26 three minutes later on a jumper and two free throws by Kayla Groh.
A Groh triple and Lavesa Glover layup helped give the Phoenix a 33-30 halftime edge, but Wright State tied the game for the 10th time at 40 on a Kanisha Ward three with 13:09 remaining in the second half. Celeste Hoewisch, however, broke the deadlock with a jumper and that started a 12-0 Phoenix run that included threes from Kati Harty and Rachel Porath.
The Green Bay margin eventually grew to 67-47 in the final minute before the Raiders scored the final five points.
After shooting 50 percent in the first half, Wright State cooled to 39 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 44 percent overall while Green Bay, after a 48 percent first half, shot 45 percent in the second half, including six of 10 from three-point range, to end up at 46 percent.
The Phoenix also led in points in the paint (30-14), points off of turnovers (20-12) and second-chance points (11-2).
Lewis led all scorers with 16 for Wright State, 12 coming in the first half, while Shey Peddy had 15, nine in the second half, and Thomas 10.
Four Green Bay (10-3, 2-0 Horizon) starters scored in double figures as Porath had 15, 10 in the second half, Groh 13, Glover 12 and Harty 12.
Wright State, now 4-9 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League, hits the road for the next three games, starting with Detroit on Saturday, January 12, at 1:00.
