Wright State rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to tie the game with five minutes left and trailed by just one with 1:22 remaining, but could get no closer as the Raiders dropped a 59-56 decision to the Dayton Flyers in women's basketball action at the Nutter Center Sunday afternoon.
Dayton broke out to a 14-5 advantage seven minutes into the contest and still led 18-10 following a Marie Rosche jumper at the 9:21 mark, only to see the Raiders go on a 10-4 run over the next four minutes, including a pair of Kanisha Ward threes, to make it 22-20.
A Ta-myra Davis basket drew WSU to within three with 3:56 remaining, but the Flyers outscored the Raiders 6-3 the rest of the half, four of those coming from Rosche, to lead 31-25 at the break.
Dayton hit 13 of 24 shots in the first 20 minutes for 54 percent while Wright State was at 35 percent, but the Raiders were also three of eight from three-point range compared to one of five for the Flyers.
An 11-3 burst, including six more by Rosche, put UD up 48-34 with 10:47 to play, but the Raiders responded with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, eight by Shey Peddy, to trail just 50-49 at the 5:39 mark.
A Davis jumper tied it at 51 with 5:04 left, but on Dayton's next possession, Kristin Daugherty gave the Flyers the lead for good by converting a three-point play. UD extended the margin to four twice from there, only to see the Raiders cut the deficit to one at 57-56 on a Molly Fox jumper and a Davis foul shot with 1:22 remaining.
Davis, though, missed the second free throw and Patrice Lalor provided what turned out to be the final margin with a pair of four shots at the 1:07 mark. Wright State had a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but Peddy's three attempt from the right elbow went off the side of the rim and was rebounded by Daugherty as time expired.
The Flyers shot 47 percent overall and hit 13 of 17 from the foul line compared to 38 percent and 11 of 16 for Wright State. Dayton also held a 40-26 rebounding advantage, but it was WSU that had a 28-22 edge in points in the paint and 23-17 in points off of turnovers as the Raiders forced 23 miscues while committing a season-low 14.
Davis led the Raiders with 19 points off the bench, tying a career-high set at Butler on March 7, 2007, during her freshman year at Youngstown State. She nearly had a double-double as she collected a season-high nine rebounds. Peddy added 13 points, all in the second half, with five assists, while LaShawna Thomas chipped in nine, all coming in the first half.
Rosche was a perfect eight-for-eight from the field and three-for-three at the line in scoring a career-high 19 off the bench for Dayton (8-4) while Daugherty had a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds.
Wright State (3-7) wraps up the nonleague and 2008 portions of its schedule on Monday, December 29, as the Raiders host IPFW in a 7:00 contest.
