LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Wright State baseball team made history on Friday at the 2008 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft as Ross Vagedes was the third WSU player taken. The Chicago Cubs drafted Vagedes with the 1,061st pick in the 35th round.
Vagedes spent five seasons wearing the Green and Gold and was a staple in the outfield and on the mound. During his time at WSU, Vagedes posted a 5-5 overall record on the mound with 61 strikeouts in 93.1 innings of work. He walked only 47 batters in that time and owns a career batting average against of .277.
At the plate, Vagedes carried a .298 batting average with 15 home runs and 81 RBI's in 497 at-bats. He set career-highs in 15 offensive categories during his senior campaign and was one of the top offensive threats in the WSU lineup.
As a draft pick of the Chicago Cubs - the first WSU player ever drafted by the organization - Vagedes will be in the National League and as a pitcher will be required to swing the bat if pitching.
