Duggins Leads Men To 69-53 Victory Over Central Michigan

Box Score

Vaughn Duggins returned to the lineup for the first time in nearly a calendar year and paced all scorers with 21 points to lead the Wright State men's basketball team to a 69-53 victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday evening at the Ervin J. Nutter Center. The Raiders would connect on 26 free throws, knock down nine three pointers and for 20 turnovers in the 16-point victory.

The Raiders never trailed in the opening half as N'Gai Evans opened the scoring with a jump shot from the free throw line and – after a CMU free throw – Troy Tabler knocked in a three pointer from the top of the key and WSU led 5-1 at the 17:26 mark.

The game would stay close for the first eight minutes of the opening frame, before WSU would use a 13-5 to take control of the half. The run was triggered by the hot shooting of Todd Brown, who knocked down three, three pointers during the run to give WSU a 25-14 edge with 8:43 to play in the opening stanza.

After Jordan Bitzer knocked down a three pointer and a pair of free throws from CMU's from Chris Kellermann cut the lead to 25-18, WSU would seize control. The Raiders would score the next ten points to push their lead to 17 points at 35-18 after a pair of Vaughn Duggins free throws.

Central Michigan would draw closer with an 8-3 run to end the half and WSU would take a 38-26 lead into the half. Wright State would shoot 40-percent in the opening frame and committed only six turnovers. Duggins – appearing in his first game since November 28, 2008 – would pace all scorers with 14 points in the first half and Brown would chip in 12.

The Chippewas would cut WSU's lead to only nine early in the second half, but the Green and Gold would use an 11-6 run to push their lead to 15 points. The run would start with an emphatic breakaway dunk from Cory Cooperwood at the 16:29 mark and end when Cooper Land knocked down first three pointer of the second half at 11:55 to push the lead to 51-36 in favor of Wright State.

The lead would not shrink under 12-points the rest of the way and Wright State would improve to 3-1 overall on the season. The 3-1 start is the best since the 2004-05 squad posted a 3-1 start – with their lone loss coming to a nationally ranked Arizona squad.

Duggins paced all scorers with 21 points in five-of-eight shooting, going nine-for-ten from the free throw line, to go along with five assists and zero turnovers. Brown posted 20 points in the contest and Land chipped in nine points in the victory. The Green and Gold shot 38-percent for the game and limited CMU to only 32-percent from the field, while forcing 20 turnovers and converting those into 24 points.

The next contest for Wright Stat will be on Saturday, November 28 as the team will travel to Boston to play Northeastern. The Raiders and Huskies will tip off 2:00 with all the action available live on 980 WONE or 1340 WIZE in Dayton.
