Raiders Hold On for 61-59 Win at Detroit

Wright State led the entire way and was up 58-47 with 2:58 to go, but the Raiders had to hold off a late Detroit rally before defeating the Titans 61-59 in Horizon League action at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon.

A tip-in and three-pointer from Todd Brown opened the scoring and Wright State took a 15-6 lead as Vaughn Duggins hit two foul shots with 9:26 remaining in the first half. A 7-0 run extended the margin to 24-13 at the 5:24 mark and the Raiders led by as much as 13 late in the period before going into halftime with a 35-26 advantage.

Both teams shot 35 percent over the first 20 minutes, but the Raiders were 13 of 17 from the foul line compared to nine of 12 for Detroit.

The Titans closed to within three at 37-34 on an Eugene Blue layup seven minutes into the second half, but Wright State maintained the lead and looked to be in control as a Brown three made it 58-47 with 2:58 left. Detroit, however, stormed back with nine straight points to trim the deficit to two with 29 seconds to go.

Duggins broke the string with a pair of foul shots to stretch the lead back to 60-56 at the 27-second mark, only to have Detroit's Chase Simon hit a three to make it a one-point contest with still 22 seconds to play.

The Titans had a chance to either tie or win the game as Cory Cooperwood hit one of two foul shots with 19 seconds left, but came up emptyon a pair of attempts in the final seconds.

The Raiders are now 3-6 in games decided by six points or less this season, with each of the last four games being decided by six or less (Valparaiso, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit).

WSU shot just 34 percent for the game compared to 40 percent for the Titans and Detroit held a 38-31 rebounding advantage, but the Raiders led 12-3 in second-chance points and 17-13 in points off of turnovers as they forced 17 while only committing nine.

Duggins led all scorers with 17 for Wright State and became the 28th member of WSU's 1000-point club with a jumper at the 1:49 mark of the first half. Brown had 16, 12 coming in the first half, and Cooper Land added nine off the bench. Cooperwood had eight rebounds.

Simon paced Detroit (12-8, 5-4 Horizon) with 15 points and seven rebounds while Xavier Keeling chipped in 12.

Wright State (12-8, 5-4 Horizon) begins the second round of Horizon League play next week with a pair of home games, taking on UIC on Thursday, January 28, at 7:30 followed by Loyola on Saturday, January 30, at 2:00.
