
Women Drop League Opener at Detroit

The Wright State women's basketball team dropped their Horizon League opener at Detroit on Sunday afternoon, falling 68-47. Molly Fox had 16 points to lead the Raiders, but four Detroit players scored in double figures and the Titans held WSU to just 35 percent shooting in the contest.
The Titans (3-9, 1-0 Horizon) shot the ball well from the field early, jumping out to an early eight point edge with 16:16 to play in the opening frame. Jalesa Jones scored on a fast break to make the score 14-6 in favor of the home team, but WSU would chip away at that margin over the next five minutes and eventually take their first lead of the contest.
Tanni Scott's jumper, followed by a layup from Ta-myra Davis at the 8:58 mark capped a 17-6 Wright State scoring spurt and put WSU ahead, 23-20. The Titans would retake that advantage by outscoring the Raiders 17-5 to close the first half and take a 37-28 lead into the locker room.
In the opening 20 minutes, Wright State held a 22-15 edge in rebounding, but Detroit shot 48 percent from the field and made 8 of 10 shots from the foul line. The Green and Gold connected on just 38 percent from the field and were 1 of 11 from behind the arc. Fox scored 10 points for WSU in the first half, with a pair of Titans tallying 11 points.
The second half started with six straight from the Titans before Fox sunk a pair of free throws at the 18:16 mark to make it a 13 point game in favor of UDM, 43-30. The lead reached 20 points at the 14:49 mark when Yar Shayok made one of two from the free throw stripe to make it a 50-30 contest.
The Raiders would pull within 11 points when Davis made a jumper with 10 minutes remaining to cap a 9-0 scoring run. With the score sitting at 50-39, Detroit rattled off an 18-8 spurt to close out the contest and seal the 68-47 victory.
Fox led the way for WSU with 16 points, while LaShawna Thomas had nine points and Davis chipped in eight. Tanni Scott pulled down a career-best nine rebounds, tying Detroit's Lauren Allen for game-high honors. WSU forced a season-low 11 turnovers and gave the ball away 19 times in the loss. The Green and Gold held a 38-32 edge on the boards, but were just two-of-18 from three- point range.
Brigid Mulroy paced all scorers with 21 points, while Demeisha Fambro had 13 to go along with 11 points from both Shayok and Jones.
The Green and Gold (4-7, 0-1 Horizon) play their seventh consecutive road contest on Thursday, January 7, when they take on #22 Green Bay at 8:00 Dayton time.
