The cold weather outside didn't affect the play on the court on Thursday evening at the Kress Events Center as the Wright State women's basketball team dropped a 68-41 decision at #18 Green Bay. The Raiders connected on 42 percent of their shots and the nationally-ranked Phoenix hit 51 percent from the field in the Horizon League contest.
The Phoenix raced out to an early 6-0 lead, hitting their first three field goals of the contest, before LaShawna Thomas's layup got the Raiders on the scoreboard. Thomas would score the first six points for WSU, but Green Bay would tally 17 points during the opening nine minutes – 10 coming from Julie Wojta – to stake to a 17-6 lead.
After a jump ball gave WSU possession, Molly Fox and Thomas each made layups and WSU had cut the lead to just seven, 17-10, with ten minutes to play in the opening half. Shortly after, a pair of Wojta baskets bookended a Celeste Hoewisch three pointer and the UWGB lead reached 12 points at 22-10 with 7:50 to play.
The Green and Gold went on a 7-2 run over the next four minutes to close the gap to seven points, 24-17, but the Phoenix closed the half with eight unanswered points and led by 15 at the half, 32-17.
UWGB's Wojta led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, while Thomas had ten points for the Raiders. Only three WSU players score during the opening 20 minutes, while only four players tallied points for the Phoenix.
Green Bay extended their advantage to start the second half, opening up a 24-point lead with a 14-5 spurt over the first six minutes. Fox had all five of WSU's points during that span, while four different Phoenix scored to open up the final 20 minutes.
The lead would swell to 30 at the 4:26 mark on a Heather Golden layup and the Phoenix would go on to claim a 68-41 victory. Green Bay never trailed in the contest and forced 30 WSU turnovers, scoring 36 points off of those Raiders missteps, and improved to 14-0 overall and 3-0 in Horizon League play.
In the contest, the Raiders put three players in double figures, led by 15 from Thomas. Ta-myra Davis grabbed a game-high eight rebounds on the night. WSU shot 42 percent from the field, with Bennett hitting the only three pointers of the game, but was 4 of 10 from the foul line.
Green Bay held the edge in assists (21-8), steals (16-11) and blocked shots (3-2), with the two teams each grabbing 28 rebounds. WSU had 11 offensive rebounds and grabbed 17 boards on the defensive end of things.
Green Bay shot 51 percent in the contest and placed three players in double-digits. Wojta scored a game-high 21 points on a perfect 10 for 10 shooting, while Kayla Tetschlag (10) and Hoewisch (14) also had good nights for the home team.
Wright State (4-8, 0-2 Horizon) will return to the court in a Saturday evening contest at Milwaukee to wrap up their eight-game road trip. The Raiders and Panthers will square off starting at 7:00 Dayton time at the Klotsche Center on the UWM campus.
