Raiders Fall to Butler 77-65

Box Score

Wright State had four players in double digits and made a 10-5 run late in the game, but it wasn't enough to beat Butler as the Bulldogs held on for a 77-65 Horizon League victory in front of 9,674 at the Nutter Center.

The Raiders kept the game tight in the opening minutes. After trailing by five Wright State was able to tie the game up at 7-7 when Duggins made a three-pointer at the 14:20 mark. Less than a minute later, Cooperwood made a layup to put the score at 9-7 to give Wright State their first and only lead of the game.

Their time in front was short-lived as Butler's Shelvin Mack scored seven consecutive points to give Butler a 14-9 lead with 10:38 remaining in the half.

Cooperwood and Todd Brown kept the game close for the next two minutes, and it was a pair of free throws from Brown that made it 17-16 Butler with 8:41 remaining to play in the half.

After a Bulldog 12-0 run made it 31-17, N'Gai Evans got the ball rolling again for the Green and Gold with a three-pointer at the 3:52 mark followed by a pair of Cooperwood free-throws that made it 31-22 with 3:20 left to play in the half. Butler eventually led 37-26 at the break.

Duggins continued his scoring drive for the Raiders as he came out and scored the first four points of the second half to put the score at 38-30. Less than two minutes later, Troy Tabler made a pair of free throws and Evans made a basket to keep the Raiders to within eight of the Bulldogs.

Butler later went up 56-41 at the 11:48 mark, but then Wright State answered back with both Evans and Duggins making a three-pointer to pull Wright State to within 11.

With 8:36 remaining in the half, Evans started a 12-5 scoring drive for the Raiders that consisted mainly of free-throws. Tabler, Scott Grote and Brown combined for seven points from the free-throw line to make it 65-59 with just 4:15 left to play.

But the Bulldogs proved to be too much as they outscored the Raiders 12-6 the rest of the way.

Wright State was led in scoring by Brown with 18 points while N'Gai Evans contributed with 10.

The Raiders shot 40.9 percent from the field and made seven shots from behind the three-point arc. It wasn't enough to match Butler's 51.1 percent from the field and the Bulldogs were also 23-24 from the free-throw line.

Mack paced Butler (11-4, 4-0 Horizon) with 21 points while Gordon Hayward had 20.

"They got in a rhythm and started making shots," said Cooperwood. "As a team, we didn't come out and play like we should have."

Wright State (10-6, 3-2 Horizon) hosts Valparaiso on Sunday at 4:00.
