Wright State shot 50 percent for the game, but could not overcome a 51 percent performance by Cincinnati as the Bearcats defeated the Raiders 77-69 at Fifth Third Arena Wednesday night.
WSU jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks in part to three-pointers from Troy Tabler and N'Gai Evans, but UC followed with six straight to tie the score. The Raiders again went in front on an Evans jumper and a Vaughn Duggins layup, only to see the Bearcats go in front for the first time with a 12-1 run, half of those coming on threes by Sean Kilpatrick.
Wright State rallied to again tie the score at 25 on an Evans basket with 2:45 remaining in the first half, but Cincinnati tallied the next five points and took that advantage in the break at 34-29.
Both teams shot the ball well in the opening 20 minutes as the Bearcats hit 14 of 26 shots for 54 percent while the Raiders were 10 of 20 for 50 percent.
The margin was still five seven minutes into the second half until Cincinnati broke the game open with a 17-2 run over a five-minute span, Kilpatrick scoring seven of those points, to make it 62-42 with 8:37 to play.
WSU closed to within seven at 72-65 on a Cooper Land layup in the final minute, but could get no closer.
Like the first half, the Raiders again shot 50 percent in hitting 16 of 32 shots while the Bearcats were 14 of 29 for 48 percent and ended the game at 51 percent overall. Wright State finished with a 28-27 rebounding edge, but committed 15 turnovers while forcing only eight, resulting in a 26-12 differential in points off of turnovers.
Tabler and Duggins each scored 18 points to lead WSU, with both scoring 11 in the second half. Evans finished with 17, 13 coming in the first half.
Kilpatrick had 26 points, including a perfect five-for-five performance from three-point range, off the bench to pace Cincinnati (6-0), while four starters scored in double figures.
Wright State (3-4) opens Horizon League play on Saturday, December 4, as the Raiders travel to Detroit for a noon contest.
