Box Score Down 12 in the first half and nine at the break, Wright State rallied to within three late in the second half, but could not get over the hump as Detroit defeated the Raiders 78-69 in the Horizon League opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
Detroit hit six of its first seven shots in jumping out to a 12-4 lead just 3:45 into the contest and the Titans extended the advantage to 32-20 on a Chase Simon three at the 7:13 mark of the first half.
WSU trimmed the deficit to 36-30 on an AJ Pacher three at the 1:57 mark, only to see Detroit score the final three points of the period to go up 39-30 at the break.
The Titans hit 13 of 26 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including four of six from three-point range, while the Raiders made 11 of 26 shots for 42 percent, but were just two of 10 from behind the arc.
Detroit's lead was 60-49 with 11 minutes to play until Wright State went on a 13-5 run, a run highlighted by threes from N'Gai Evans, Troy Tabler, to make it 65-62 with 6:31 remaining.
Tabler again made it a three-point game at 67-64 with two foul shots at the 3:01 mark, only to see the Titans' Ray McCallum answered with three free throws of his own. A Tabler three drew the Raiders to within four at 73-69 with 1:12 to go, but WSU would get no closer as Detroit scored the final six points.
The Titans scorched the nets in the second half, making 10 of 13 shots to finish the contest at 59 percent overall, while the Raiders shot 45 percent the final 20 minutes to end up at 44 percent. Detroit hit six of nine three attempts compared to nine of 24 for Wright State.
Detroit also held a 33-16 rebounding advantage and led 30-20 in points in the paint and 11-2 in fast-break points.
Vaughn Duggins paced all scorers with 23 points for WSU while Evans had 14 and Tabler 10.
Jason Calliste led Detroit (5-4, 1-0 Horizon) with 20 points while Eli Holman posted a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. McCallum added 16 and Simon 12.
Wright State (3-5, 0-1 Horizon) returns home for a pair of games next week, taking on Air Force on Wednesday, December 8, at 7:00 followed by Tusculum on Saturday, December 11, at 3:00.
