Box Score Wright State led by just one at the half, but shot 63 percent in the second half as the Raiders recorded a 67-54 win over the Green Bay Phoenix in Horizon League action at the Nutter Center Saturday night.
"This was a really good performance from our guys," said Head Coach Brad Brownell. "I thought we played with great energy and just battled."
The Raiders fell behind early on as Green Bay set the tempo early on for three-point shooting as the Phoenix drained four shots from behind the arc to take a 16-7 lead at the 15:57 mark. The score stayed that way as both teams went on a four minute scoring draught that ended when Scott Grote made a layup with 11:55 on the clock. That layup sparked a 9-0 run for the Raiders that tied the game at 16-16.
The two teams exchanged three-pointers for most of the final minutes of the half, but it was a dunk by Todd Brown that gave the Raiders a 28-27 lead at the break.
In all, the two teams combined for 11 three-point baskets in the opening frame. The Raiders were 12-29 from the field and shot 33 percent from behind the arc.
WSU started the second half the same way it left the first half as N'Gai Evans drained a three-pointer in the opening minutes to give the Raiders a 31-27 lead.
Vaughn Duggins started a 7-0 run minutes later that concluded with Brown draining his second three-pointer of the game to give the Raiders a 45-35 lead with 13:36 remaining.
Evans helped the Raiders build their lead as he drained a three and had the first dunk of his collegiate career as WSU took a 56-45 advantage.
The Green and Gold never let Green Bay get any closer than seven points in the final five minutes as they recorded the 13-point win.
WSU hit 15 of 24 shots the final 20 minutes, including four of five from behind the arc, to finish at 51 percent overall while Green Bay ended the night at 43 percent. The Phoenix was perfect on all 11 foul shot attempts compared to five of eight for the Raiders.
Wright State was led in scoring by Duggins with 20 and Evans matched his career high 18 points. Brown chipped in with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Brown now has 504 career rebounds, making him the 18th Raider to record 500 rebounds.
Rahmon Fletcher paced Green Bay (17-10, 9-6 Horizon) with 14 points while Bryquis Perine had 11.
With the win, Wright State (17-9, 10-5) moves into second place in the Horizon League standings. The Raiders will try to hold on to that position in their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 17, as they take on Detroit at 7 p.m.
