Box Score Wright State trailed by one at halftime, but dominated the second half by a 37-19 count as the Raiders maintained their hold of second place in the Horizon League standings with a 70-53 win over Detroit in the regular-season home finale at the Nutter Center Wednesday night.
All three of Wright State's seniors who played in the win were in double digits for scoring. In fact, all five of the starters scored in double digits, marking the only time this season that feat has been accomplished this season.
Wright State started the game off with a big run that featured N'Gai Evans making a pair of baskets and a dunk from Vaughn Duggins to give the Raiders an 11-5 lead at the 14:46 mark. After Detroit was able to tie the game at 14-14 the Raiders went on another scoring streak as Cory Cooperwood scored all eight of his first half points during the 13-5 run as the Green and Gold took a 27-19 advantage.
But in the final 5:10 Detroit went on a 15-6 scoring streak that was capped off by a Woody Payne three-pointer as the Raiders found themselves trailing 34-33 at the half.
The Raiders quickly regained the lead as Cooperwood scored a basket to start the half and spurred a 13-5 run. The Raiders took control of the game as Todd Brown recorded a pair of back-to-back three-point plays and Duggins scored a three of his own with 14:27 on clock to put the Raiders ahead 46-37.
With 7:36 left on the clock WSU took a 58-41 lead after Duggins made a driving lay-up and Brown and Ronnie Thomas made back-to-back shots from behind the arc.
The Raiders then sewed up the victory after Brown and Thomas once again made a pair of baskets to take a 68-49 lead with 3:18 remaining.
The Green and Gold shot 46.6 percent from the field and were 9-12 from the free-throw line on the night.
Wright State was led in scoring by Brown with 17 points while Evans contributed with 16. Cooperwood, Thomas and Duggins each had 10 points. Cooperwood also pulled down seven rebounds.
Chase Simon paced Detroit (15-13, 7-9 Horizon) with 13 points while Xavier Keeling had 11.
Wright State (18-9, 11-5 Horizon) will finish the rest of the regular season on the road. The Raiders will start their road trip with the ESPN Bracketbuster game on Saturday, February 20, against Ohio University with tip-off scheduled for 4:00.
