Box Score A Vaughn Duggins layup with 1:44 remaining in the first half tied the score at 29, but #23/15 Butler broke away with a 16-2 run over the next 5:11 as the Bulldogs went on to a 74-62 win over the Raiders in Horizon League action at Hinkle Fieldhouse Saturday night.
The score was tied nine times in the opening 20 minutes and neither team had more than a four-point advantage until Butler closed out the period by tallying the last six points after the Duggins layup to go up 35-29 at the break.
Both teams shot the ball in the first half as Butler hit 13 of 20 attempts for 65 percent while Wright State was 11 of 21 for 52 percent.
The Bulldogs, who hit their final four shots in the first half, continued that streak into the second half by connecting on their first five in building a 45-31 lead with 16:33 remaining in the contest.
Wright State came within 10 at 52-42 on a Cory Cooperwood basket and a Duggins three from the top of the key with 10:59 left, but could get no closer as Matt Howard followed with a three-point play and Shelvin Mack had a jumper.
Butler scorched the nets for 68 percent overall, including 14 of 20 in the second half for 70 percent, and hit 16 of 18 from the foul line compared to 47 percent and 11 of 14 foul shooting for WSU. The Bulldogs led 44-24 in points in the paint.
Duggins paced the Raiders with 18 points while N'Gai Evans had 14 and Todd Brown 11.
Willie Veasley hit all nine of his shot attempts, including a three, to finish with 19 points for Butler (20-4, 13-0 Horizon) while Howard had 12, Gordon Hayward 11 and Mack and Zach Hahn 10 each.
Wright State (15-9, 8-5 Horizon) kicks off its final home stand of the regular season with a pair of games next week, taking on Milwaukee on Thursday, February 11, and Green Bay on Saturday, February 13, with both games starting at 7:00.
