Box Score Wright State could not overcome Butler shooting 52 percent from the field, including nine of 19 from three-point range, as the Raiders fell to the #12 Bulldogs 70-45 in the finals of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship Tuesday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Raiders never led in the contest as Shelvin Mack opened the scoring with a three and, despite WSU closing to within one twice, later hit a jumper and another three to put Butler up 17-9 with 12:09 remaining in the first half.
Vaughn Duggins made it 27-21 on a layup at the 5:31 mark, only to see the Bulldogs score the next five points and close the half by a 15-7 count to hold a 42-28 halftime advantage.
Butler hit 14 of 21 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including eight of 13 from behind the arc, while Wright State shot 48 percent, but was just one of seven from three-point range.
An 11-0 burst extended the Bulldog lead to 55-30 with 14 minutes to play and Butler gradually built on the lead the rest of the way before the Raiders scored six of the game's final seven points.
WSU connected on only five of 20 shots in the second half, one of 13 from three-point range, to end up at 35 percent overall while Butler finished at 52 percent for the game and was nine of 19 from three.
Vaughn Duggins and Cory Cooperwood had nine each.
Mack and Matt Howard both had 14 points to pace Butler (28-4) while Zach Hahn had 11 points off the bench. The Bulldogs had three other players score eight or more points.
