The Wright State softball team split a Horizon League doubleheader with Green Bay on Saturday in a pair marathon games at the WSU Softball Field. The Raiders won the first game 8-7 in an eight-inning contest that took three hours and seven minutes to complete. WSU then dropped the second game 13-9 in a game that lasted two hours and nine minutes.
In the first game, the Raiders fell behind 1-0 in the first, but were able to rebound with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kristen Bradshaw led the inning off with a single to left field and stole second. Bradshaw then came around to score when the Green Bay catcher threw the ball in the outfield in an attempt to catch her leaning off second base.
The Raiders went up 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Briauna Birl reached first on a fielder's choice, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and then stole home as part of a double steal with Bradshaw.
Green Bay tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth, but the tie was short-lived as Malerie Klingler and Bradshaw scored to give Wright State a 4-2 lead. Klingler started off the inning off by reaching base on an error and, after moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Birl, an RBI single by Bradshaw brought Klingler around to score. Louie Haney followed with a hit to plate Bradshaw.
The Phoenix took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, only to see WSU knot the game at 5-5 as Birl scored her second run of the game on an RBI single by Haney.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to put the score at 7-7 and it stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when Birl reached on a bunt hit, stole second, went to third on a throwing error and scored as Haney had an infield hit.
Haney went five-for-six in the opener with three RBI while China Frost had four hits and Bradshaw was three-for-three with two runs scored. Birl scored three times.
In the second game, Green Bay took a commanding 7-0 lead in the first two innings. Not to be out done, the Raiders sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the second as they brought home six to make the score 7-6. Mollie Berry started the rally with a single and a stolen base followed by Klingler reaching base on an error. Both runners were then brought home on a double by Shilt. Birl followed Shilt by hitting a double of her own to put runners on second and third and both came in on a Bradshaw double. A Haney double made it 7-5 and she scored the final run of the inning on a Frost single.
Green Bay (20-16, 5-11 Horizon) extended its lead when Danielle Peerenboom hit a two-run double in the third to give the Phoenix a 9-6 lead, but Wright State answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-8.
It was still a one-run game until the Phoenix tacked on three runs in the sixth, the key blow being a two-run home run by Katie Cooney.
Shilt had three hits, including two home runs, in the nightcap with three RBI while Berry also had three hits, Bradshaw two hits and three RBI and Birl two hits and two runs scored.
Wright State (19-24-1, 10-7 Horizon) wraps up the series with an 11:00 single game on Sunday. Wright State seven seniors--Birl, Bradshaw, Allison Cox, Melanie Heyne, Klingler, Sharon Palma and Jamie Perkins--will be honored before the game.
