Men Drop 70-66 Decision to Charlotte

Box Score

The men's basketball team couldn't quite get over the hump as they dropped a 70-66 decision to Charlotte Saturday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

Charlotte scored the first seven points of the contest and the 49ers looked to be in control as two Chris Braswell foul shots increased the margin to 21-9 with 7:04 remaining in the first half.

WSU, however, stormed back with 10 straight points, including threes from AJ Pacher and John Balwigaire and the Raiders closed to within one on a Julius Mays triple before heading into halftime down just 28-26.

Wright State shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half compared to 46 percent for Charlotte, but the Raiders hit six of 12 from three-point range while the 49ers were only two of nine.

WSU trailed by just two on three different occasions in the first three minutes of the second half, but Charlotte maintained the advantage each time and eventually went up 43-33 following a E. Victor Nickerson basket with 12:45 to play.

The margin was 58-49 at the 7:15 mark, but again the Raiders mounted a comeback, tallying seven unanswered points to again make it a two-point game.

Again, however, Charlotte was able to keep the lead and maintain it the rest of the way despite the Raiders cutting the deficit to two on two more occasions down the stretch.

The 49ers continued their hot shooting into the second half as they made 14 of 21 attempts to finish the night at 56 percent overall while Wright State was at 37 percent.  It ultimately came down to free throws as Charlotte was 17 of 24 while WSU was 13 of 20, including nine of 15 in the second half.

For the third straight game, Mays led the way for the Raiders with 25 points, 17 of those coming after halftime.  He finished the week with 61 points (21 vs. Florida, 15 at North Florida) in three contests after scoring just eight points over the first three games of the season.  Mays also paced WSU with five rebounds.

Cole Darling chipped in 12 for Wright State, but no other Raider had more than seven.

Braswell paced Charlotte (3-2) with 22 points while DeMario Mayfield had 14 and Jamar Briscoe 13.

Wright State (2-4) opens Horizon League play next week with a pair of home games, taking on Cleveland State on Thursday, December 1, at 7:00 followed by Youngstown State on Saturday, December 3, at 3:00.
