The Wright State women's basketball team cut an 18-point deficit to four in the final minute, but could get no closer as Dayton held on for a 77-69 win Tuesday night at UD Arena.
Dayton jumped out to a 14-4 lead four minutes into the contest and, despite WSU cutting the margin to 24-21 on a Shaunda Sandifer layup with 6:58 to play, the Flyers maintained the advantage the remainder of the period and led 41-30 at the break.
UD shot 42 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 39 for Wright State, and the Flyers had a 10-2 edge in points off of turnovers as they forced 10 while committing only three.
The Raiders closed to within nine twice early in the second half, only to see Dayton go on a 10-2 run to open a 64-46 lead with 10:19 remaining.
The UD lead was 70-53 with six minutes to play, but WSU stormed back from there with nine straight points, five of those coming from Kirsten Gliesmann. An Ellie Queen three from the left corner pushed the margin back into double figures, only to see the Raiders answer with seven more in a row, capped off by a Sandifer putback, to make it 73-69 with 58 seconds left.
Wright State, however, would get no closer as Ally Malott hit a short jumper on Dayton's next possession and, after a Raider miss on the other end, two Patrice Lalor foul shots rounded out the scoring.
The Raiders finished the night with a higher shooting percentage (39-37 percent) and had a 51-45 rebounding advantage, but the Flyers were 10 of 26 from three-point range compared to five of 16 for WSU and forced 16 turnovers while committing eight, resulting in a 15-5 differential in points off of turnovers.
Kim Demmings led all scorers with 20 points while Courtney Boyd had 13 and Sandifer nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Justine Raterman paced Dayton (5-3) with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds while Andrea Hoover had 16 points, Malott 14 off the bench and Casey Nance 10.
After five straight on the road, Wright State (4-3) finally returns home Saturday to take on Southern Illinois starting at 2:00. The Raiders now play six of their next seven games at WSU's Nutter Center.
