Box Score Wright State rallied from an early 10-point deficit to lead by three late in the first half, only to see Butler follow with a 20-7 run en route to a 71-63 decision over the Raiders Thursday night at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
WSU led 5-2 1:30 into the game on a Vaughn Duggins three and a Matt Vest layup, but the Bulldogs tallied the next 13 points to go up 15-5 before an Armond Battle three broke the scoring drought at the 13:34 mark of the first half.
The margin was still 10 at 26-16 until Wright State scored 13 unanswered of its own, including a pair of Cooper Land threes and one by Duggins, to go back in front at 29-26 with 6:02 remaining.
Butler, though, would outsocre WSU 13-5 the rest of the period to lead 39-34 at the break. The Bulldogs scorched the nets for 73 percent in the opening 20 minutes, hitting 16 of 22 shots, including 11 of 12 inside the three-point arc, while the Raiders shot 46 percent overall and were seven of 13 from behind the arc.
Butler scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to push the advantage back into double figures at 46-36, only to see the Raiders cut the deficit to 47-45 on a N'Gai Evans layup with 12:30 to go.
WSU, though, would get no closer as the Bulldogs pushed the lead back up to nine and then held off one last Wright State charge to make it 64-60 at the 1:30 mark.
The Raiders hit 10 of 20 shots in the second half to finish at 48 percent compared to 57 percent for the game for Butler, who shot 42 percent the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs also made 12 of 15 foul shots, 10 of 12 in the second half, while WSU was nine of 14, eight of 13 in the second half.
Duggins led Wright State with 19 points while Land, in his first action since scoring 13 against Butler on January 16, had 12 off the bench on four three-pointers and Evans had 10 along with seven rebounds.
Butler (17-9, 9-5 Horizon) was paced by Shelvin Mack's 20 points while Andrew Smith and Shawn Vanzant each had 15.
Wright State (17-10, 10-5 Horizon) heads to Valparaiso Saturday for an 8:00 Eastern contest against the league-leading Crusaders.
