Box Score Down six early in the second half, the Wright State men's basketball team outscored Loyola 26-14 the rest of the way to pull out a 47-41 Horizon League win Friday at WSU's Nutter Center.
The Ramblers scored the initial four points of the game and again led by four at 16-12 at the 2:17 mark of the first half on a Joe Crisman jumper and a Jordan Hicks three. The Raiders answered with five straight on two Julius Mays free throws and a John Balwigaire triple, only to see Loyola score the final four points of the half to go up 20-17.
WSU shot just 21 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 44 percent for the Ramblers, but the Raiders forced 12 turnovers while committing only four, resulting in a 10-5 differential in points off turnovers.
Crisman put Loyola up 27-21 with a layup at the 15:27 mark of the second half before Wright State went on a 15-0 run over the next nine minutes, nine of those coming from Mays.
Crisman drew the Ramblers to within four on a three with 3:28 left and Denzel Brito made it 42-38 with two foul shots with 1:37 to play, but Loyola would get no closer.
The Raiders shot 46 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 33 percent overall while the Ramblers shot 39 percent the final 20 minutes to end the night at 42 percent. WSU hit 11 of 14 foul shot compared to eight of 11 for Loyola and forced the Ramblers into 22 turnovers while committing eight, resulting in a 20-9 edge in points off of turnovers.
Mays led all scorers with 16 points for Wright State while Armond Battle had 11.
Both Hicks and Ben Averkamp had 10 points and nine rebounds for Loyola (5-16, 0-11 Horizon) while Crisman had nine.
Wright State (11-12, 6-5 Horizon) heads to Indiana for a pair of games next week, taking on Butler on Thursday, February 2 at 7:00 followed by Valparaiso on Saturday, February 4, at 8:00 Eastern.
