Raiders Drop Close One to Cleveland State

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team led by five with 6:43 remaining, only to see Cleveland State score 11 of the game's final 12 points to come away with a 55-50 decision over the Raiders in Horizon League action Wednesday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

The Vikings led 10-4 early before WSU tied it at 13 on two Kendall Griffin foul shots with 10:36 remaining in the first half.  The Raiders, however, were unable to take the lead at any point of the opening 20 minutes as CSU regained the advantage on a Anton Grady jumper and maintained a slight edge throughout in taking a 28-26 lead into halftime.

Cleveland State shot 52 percent compared to 38 percent for Wright State in the first half, but WSU was eight of 10 at the foul line while the Vikings were five of seven.

Back-to-back baskets from Michael Karena to start the second half gave the Raiders their first lead of the night, only to see CSU take it right back on a Marlin Mason three.  Reggie Arceneaux, though, put WSU up again at 41-39 with a three at the 12:49 mark and momentum appeared to be on Wright State's side as the margin grew to 49-44 on Joe Thomasson free throws with 6:43 left.

Baskets by Trey Lewis and Mason, however, cut the deficit to one and after Griffin hit one of two foul shots with 1:31 remaining, an Andre Yates three at the 1:19 mark gave the Vikings the lead for good at 51-50.

After a Raider miss, a Lewis three-point play with 23 seconds left extended the advantage to four and Charlie Lee later made one of two foul shots for the final margin.

CSU shot 48 percent for the game compared to 43 percent for WSU, but the foul line proved to be the difference as the Raiders were 15 of 24, but just seven of 14 in the second half, while the Vikings were eight of 12.

Karena, for the second straight game, set a season high in scoring with 18 points to lead Wright State while Griffin had 10 had off the bench.

Grady finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds for Cleveland State (10-9, 4-1 Horizon) while Mason had 14 and Lewis 13.

Wright State (10-8, 2-2 Horizon) hosts Valparaiso Saturday evening at 7:00.
