A Chrishawn Hopkins three from NBA range sent the game into overtime, only to see Oakland take control from there as the Golden Grizzlies defeated the Wright State men's basketball team 84-76 Wednesday night at the O'rena.
A 15-0 run, highlighted by a pair of Hopkins threes and one from Reggie Arceneaux, gave WSU a 26-15 lead with 7:35 remaining in the first half and the margin was still 12 before Oakland closed out the period with a 9-2 run of its own to make it 33-28 at the break.
The Raiders shot 54 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including six of 10 from three-point range, while the Golden Grizzlies shot 35 percent overall and four of 12 from behind the arc. Oakland, though was six of 10 at the foul line compared to just one of two for Wright State.
WSU upped the advantage to 47-37 on a Grant Benzinger three with 11:48 to play in regulation, but the Golden Grizzlies answered with a 13-2 burst to regain the lead at 50-49 with 5:06 left. Arceneaux put the Raiders back in front with three and Wright State did not trail until a Nick Daniels three-point play gave Oakland a 60-59 edge at the 43.9-second mark.
Kahlil Felder made it 62-59 on two foul shots with 13.5 seconds left, but Hopkins sent the game into overtime as he connected on a deep three with two seconds to play.
The overtime period, though, was controlled by the Golden Grizzlies as they scored the first eight points. WSU cut the deficit to 77-74 on another Hopkins three and a layup from Joe Thomasson at the 33.1-second mark, but could get no closer.
The Raiders shot 46 percent from the field for the game and hit 13 of 28 threes compared to 44 percent shooting for Oakland, who was seven of 26 from three, but the Golden Grizzlies were 27 of 32 at the line, including 13 of 14 in overtime and 21 of 22 after halftime, while WSU was nine of 17.
Thomasson had 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for Wright State while Roderick Davis had a season-high 17 points and seven boards off the bench for the Raiders. Hopkins added 16.
