Men Fall at Green Bay

Box Score

The Wright State men's basketball team rallied from a six-point deficit in the first half to tie the game, only to see Green Bay close the period with a 9-2 run and then outscore the Raiders 45-28 in the second half for a 79-55 Horizon League decision Monday night at the Resch Center.

Threes by Joe Thomasson and Reggie Arceneaux helped WSU take an 8-4 early lead before the Phoenix used an 8-0 burst to go in front for the first time at 14-10 with 11 minutes remaining in the period.

Green Bay later went up six on two occasions, the second at 20-14 with 7:37 left, before Wright State tied the game at 22 thanks in part to a Grant Benzinger three and one from Kendall Griffin, playing in his first game since November 14.

A JT Yoho foul shot made it 25-25 at the 3:51 mark, but it was all Phoenix the rest of the half as it scored nine of the final 11 points, including a Greg Mays three in the final seconds, to go up 34-27 at the half.

The shooting percentage were nearly identical in the first half as WSU hit for 43.5 percent, including four of 10 from three-point range, while Green Bay shot 43.8 percent overall and was two of five from behind the arc.  The Phoenix, though, had nine more attempts thanks in part to a 20-15 rebounding edge, 9-4 on the offensive end.

Seven points from Keifer Sykes helped push the margin into double figures early in the second half and Green Bay later put the game out of reach with a 10-2 run, including six more from Sykes.

The Phoenix shot 52 percent in the second half to finish at 48 percent overall while the Raiders shot just 20 percent the final 20 minutes to end up at 31 percent for the game.  Green Bay led 47-29 in rebounds and 38-14 in points in the paint.

Yoho led WSU with 13 points while Griffin had 12 points off the bench.

Sykes, the preseason Horizon League Player of the Year, led all scorers with 28 points for Green Bay (12-3, 1-0 Horizon), 23 in the second half, while Jordan Fouse nearly had a triple-double as he had 16 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists.

Wright State (9-7, 1-1 Horizon) travels to Youngstown State on Thursday, January 8, for a 7:00 contest.
