The Wright State women's basketball team led by seven at the half, but could not maintain the momentum as Georgia pulled away late for a 63-57 decision Sunday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.
Following a 12-12 first quarter that saw WSU take the lead twice, the Raiders regained the lead in the second period. Four foul shots and a jumper by Antania Hayes made it 20-14 and after the Bulldogs closed to within one, a 6-0 burst to end the half on a Hayes three-point play and a Kim Demmings three-pointer put Wright State up 26-19 at the break.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half as WSU shot 31 percent, but was seven of 11 at the foul line, while Georgia shot just 24 percent and was three of five at the stripe.
Another Demmings triple and a fast-break layup from Emily Vogelpohl pushed the advantage into double figures at 31-21, only to see the Bulldogs chip away and eventually go back in front 39-38 on two Pachis Roberts foul shots in the final minute of the third quarter.
Symone Simmons gave the Raiders the lead back with a jumper on the next possession, but a Tiaria Griffin three put Georgia back in front heading into the final stanza.
Vogelpohl connected on a three from the right corner at the 8:18 mark of the fourth quarter to make it 45-43 and the game was tied at 56 on two foul shots by the freshman guard with 3:26 remaining.
The Raiders, though, managed just one point the rest of the way as Merritt Hempe gave the Bulldogs the lead for good with a jumper at the 3:14 mark and Georgia added five more points in the final minute.
The Bulldogs hit 16 of 32 shots in the second half to end up at 37 percent overall and made 13 of 17 foul shots compared to 33 percent shooting and 13 of 23 free throw shooting for WSU.
Hayes led all scorers with 26 points while Demmings had 12 and Vogelpohl 10 along with eight assists and six steals.
Wright State (10-3) opens Horizon League play on Wednesday, December 30, as the Raiders host UIC at 7:00.
