Men Fall to Green Bay

The Wright State men's basketball team fell behind 26-9 early and could not recover as Green Bay went on to a 71-58 decision in Horizon League action Monday night at WSU's Nutter Center.

The Phoenix scored the first seven points of the game and eventually built the 26-9 advantage on a Khalil Small three-pointer with 11:17 remaining in the first half.  WSU, though, was able to cut the deficit to 12 three times down the stretch, the final time being 37-25 at the half following a Michael Karena basket.

Green Bay shot 42 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes compard to 39 percent for Wright State, but the Phoenix led 14-4 in second-chance points thanks to eight offensive rebounds and 8-2 in points off of turnovers.

A Justin Mitchell foul shot made it 41-32 with 15:33 to play, but that would be the closest the Raiders would get as Green Bay scored the next seven points and led by as much as 23 at 69-46 at the 5:26 mark.

WSU actually finished with a higher field goal percentage for the game (49-46 percent), but the Phoenix led 20-8 in points off of turnovers and 18-9 in second-chance points.

Karena led the Raiders with 17 points while Chrishawn Hopkins added 10.

Green Bay (18-5, 7-2 Horizon) had five players in double figures, led by Greg Mays with 14 and Daeshon Francis with 14 off the bench.  Keifer Sykes had 13 points, six assists and five steals while Jordan Fouse posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists.  Alfonzo McKinnie chipped in 10 points.

Wright State (11-12, 3-6 Horizon) is right back on the road on Saturday, February 7, for a 2:00 contest at Cleveland State.
