In a back-and-forth battle that saw 13 ties and 12 lead changes, it was Green Bay with the final say as the Phoenix outscored the Wright State's women's basketball team 13-4 in overtime to claim the Horizon League Tournament title with a 86-77 decision Sunday at the Kress Events Center.
Green Bay led 13-12 until the Raiders went on a 15-2 run, six of those coming from Abby Jump and five by Tay'ler Mingo, to go up 27-15 with 8:58 remaining in the first half.
The Phoenix stormed back into the lead with 15 straight points, only to see WSU take a 35-34 halftime lead as Mingo and Breanna Stucke connected on three-pointers and Richelle van der Keijl had a putback just ahead of the horn.
Wright State shot 43 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including six of 17 three-pointers, while Green Bay shot 44 percent overall and was three of 13 from behind the arc.
The Phoenix went up 49-41 seven minutes into the second half before the Raiders rallied to tie it at 51 on a Courtney Boyd three from the left corner with 9:26 left. Neither team then had more than a four-point advantage down the stretch until Green Bay led 73-69 on a Mehryn Kraker three at the 1:26 mark.
WSU, though, rallied to send the game into overtime as Stucke made two foul shots with 1:07 remaining and Mingo connected on a layup with 27 seconds left.
In the extra period, however, it was all Green Bay as Allie LeClaire hit a three to put the Phoenix up for good and Green Bay scored nine of the game's final 10 points.
The Raiders shot 38 percent for the game compared to 46 percent for the Phoenix, who led 47-33 in rebounds and had a 13-7 edge in second-chance points.
Mingo, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team for the second straight year, led WSU with 27 points and six assists, giving her 77 points and 28 assists in three tournament games. Stucke, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, added 18 points as she had 43 altogether in the tournament. Symone Denham was the third Raider chosen to the All-Tournament Team as she had 41 points in three games, including a career-high 19 in the semifinals Friday against Cleveland State.
Wright State, which set a single-game tournament scoring record in the 99-87 win over Cleveland State, set a tournament record for points overall with 271, bettering the 258 scored by Green Bay in 2011. The Raiders also tied the tournament record for field goals with 91, set by the Phoenix in 2007.
Green Bay (28-4) was paced by tournament MVP Tesha Buck, who posted a double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists. LeClaire had 17 off the bench while Sam Terry had 16, Kraker 10 and Kaili Lukan 10.
Wright State (25-8) will now await seeding in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), which will be announced late Monday night. The Raiders, who will be making their first-ever appearance in the WNIT, have earned the league's automatic bid to the tournament, which begins with first-round games Wednesday-Friday.
