11 members of the Wright State baseball team were recognized as the Horizon League announced its postseason honors on Tuesday.
Senior Andrew Elliott was selected as the Relief Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season while first baseman Gabe Snyder was chosen as the Freshman of the Year.
Elliott, sophomore catcher Sean Murphy, senior second baseman Michael Timm, sophomore shortstop Mitch Roman and freshman designated hitter Matt Morrow were all named to the First Team while junior pitcher Jesse Scholtens, senior pitcher Luke Mamer, Snyder, junior third baseman John Brodner and senior outfielder Mark Fowler were selected to the Second Team.
Chosen to the All-Freshman Team were Snyder and Morrow along with pitcher Jeremy Randolph.
Elliott (Wheelersburg, OH/Wheelersburg) was second in the league in saves with 10 as he posted a 5-3 record with a 2.41 earned run average. He recorded 49 strikeouts in 41 innings while holding the opposition to a .189 batting average.
With the 10 saves in 2015, Elliott now has 24 in his career, good for third on the all-time Raider list. He passed current Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim reliever Joe Smith (22) with three saves this past weekend against Valparaiso.
Snyder (Millersburg, OH/West Holmes) ranks fourth in the league with 43 RBI, third in doubles with 17 and is tied for sixth in home runs with five as he is batting .283 on the season. He is also tied for seventh in walks with 26 as he has a .409 on-base percentage.
Snyder drove in 24 runs during league play, tying him for fifth, and his nine doubles in such games also tied him for fifth. This is the second straight year that a WSU player has earned Freshman of the Year honors as Murphy won the award in 2014 and the Raiders have now had five Freshman/Newcomer of the Year honorees in their history (Trent Matthews 2001, Quentin Cate 2009, Corey Davis 2011, Murphy 2014).
Murphy (Dayton, OH/Centerville), coming off that Freshman of the Year recognition, hit .311 this season with 29 RBI and 40 runs scored, tying him for eighth in the league. Behind the plate, Murphy threw out 15 would-be basestealers, 11 of those coming during league play. In 29 conference games, Murphy hit .325 with 18 RBI and 22 runs scored.
A Second Team All-League selection last season, Murphy is one of 20 finalists for the Johnny Bench Award.
Timm (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) tied for fourth in the league with 16 doubles as he hit .311 with 35 RBI and 37 runs scored. A First Team All-League honoree in 2014, Timm hit a team-best .357 in league play this season with 11 doubles, 20 runs scored and 24 RBI, which tied with Snyder for the team lead.
Roman (Fishers, IN/Hamilton Southeastern) hit .330 in his first season with Wright State after playing last season at Sinclair. He drove in 35 runs, had 11 doubles and scored 37 runs while tying for the league lead in hits with 74.
Morrow (Richmond, IN/Richmond) ranks second on the team with a .336 batting average as he drove in 20, scored 30 runs and posted a .453 on-base percentage. He hit .345 in league play while driving in 17.
Scholtens (Fairfield, CA/Rodriguez) posted a 6-4 record with a 2.79 ERA in his first season at WSU, striking out a team-high 60 in 77.1 inning while holding the opposition to a .255 batting average. The ERA is good for third in the league while the 60 strikeouts and six wins tie him for third and the .255 batting average is fourth.
Mamer (Springfield, OH/Kenton Ridge) stepped into a weekend starter role due to injury and posted a league-best 2.54 earned run average while striking out 40 and only walking nine in 63.2 innings. He struck out 35 and only walked eight in 53.1 innings during league play.
Brodner (St. Charles, IL/North) drove in 21 runs while providing the Raiders with solid defense at third, with 13 of those RBIs coming in league games.
Fowler (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) leads the team and is sixth in the league with a .337 batting average. He also leads Wright State and is seventh in the league with 43 runs scored. His 15 doubles are tied for sixth in the conference.
Randolph (MIamisburg, OH/Miamisburg) tied for the league lead in wins with seven despite appearing in just three games with one start during conference play. Randolph posted wins over Miami (FL), Xavier, MIami (OH) twice, Cincinnati, Dayton and Valparaiso.
Wright State (38-14, 21-8 Horizon) opens Horizon League Tournament play on Thursday, May 21, as the #2 seeded Raiders face the higher seeded winner of Wednesday's games, which will be either be #3 seed Milwaukee, #4 seed Valparaiso or #5 seed Youngstown State, at 4:00 Eastern at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Indiana. The tournament continues through Saturday, May 23, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
