Box Score The Wright State baseball team broke open a 1-0 game with a four-run fifth and went on to win the rubber match of its series with UIC 7-1 Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. With the victory, the Raiders moved back into first place in the Horizon League standings, a half-game ahead of the Flames.
WSU took the lead in the fourth without the benefit of a hit. Mark Fowler was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second, went to third on a Michael Timm fly ball to center and scored on a Matt Morrow ground out.
The Raiders then opened up a 5-0 advantage with the four-run fifth. A fielder's choice grounder by Sean Murphy plated Gabe Snyder with the first run and Andrew McCafferty scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mitch Roman. The final two runs came on RBI singles by Fowler and Timm.
UIC broke up the shutout on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth, but Andrew Elliott entered the game for the Raiders at that point and induced a ground out to prevent further damage.
Wright State then added two run in its half of the eighth as a McCafferty double to left plated pinch-runner Derreck Garcia and Snyder.
Elliott retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out two, to earn his seventh save of the season in relief of starter Trevor Swaney (3-2), who pitched 5.1 scoreless innings.
Offensively, Murphy and Timm each had two hits.
Wright State (32-13, 16-7 Horizon) travels to Milwaukee next weekend for a three-game series, starting with a single game Friday at 4:00 Eastern.
