The Wright State women's basketball team took the lead for good by scoring the final five points of the first half and outscored Eastern Kentucky 28-16 in the third quarter in defeating the Colonels 85-73 in the opening game of the Wright State Invitational Presented by Holiday Inn Monday afternoon at WSU's Nutter Center.

The Raiders burst out to a 7-0 lead two minutes into the contest thanks to four points from Chelsea Welch and a Symone Simmons three and the margin eventually grew to 11-2 on two Lexi Smith foul shots, but back came EKU with 11 straight points to take its only lead of the day.
WSU tallied the final six points of the period to go up 21-14 after one and still led 29-23 on a Smith basket at the 5:11 mark of the second quarter, but again the Colonels would rally, tying the score three different times following scores by Alexus Cooper, the final being 36-36 on a three with just over a minute left.
Wright State, though, closed out the first half with a flourish by scoring the final five points, including an Emily Vogelpohl three, to take a 41-36 halftime advantage.
A pair of threes from Mackenzie Taylor and one by Vogelpohl in the opening two minutes of the third quarter pushed the margin to 50-38 and the Raiders later broke the game open at 69-47 with a 13-0 run, including two three-pointers from Myrthe den Heeten and five more points by Smith.
Eastern Kentucky would get no closer than 11 the rest of the way as WSU hit 22 of 27 free throws for the game, nine of 11 in the final period.   Wright State also led 16-8 in points off of turnovers and 22-14 in second-chance points.
Smith posted her second double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Raiders, hitting seven of eight shots from the field and at the foul line.  Welch added 17 points and six assists while Vogelpohl had 12.
In the second game of the day, Miami rolled to a 69-47 win over Fort Wayne.
Wright State (6-4) will face Fort Wayne to open the second day of the tournament on Tuesday at 1:30, with Eastern Kentucky taking on Miami at 4:00.
