Men Pick Up First League Win at Detroit Mercy

The Wright State men's basketball team connected on 12 three-pointers, eight in the first half, and picked up their first Horizon League win of the season Saturday afternoon with an 85-72 victory at Detroit Mercy.

There were eight lead changes and three ties in the first half until Mike La Tulip hit the final two of three consecutive three-pointers to give the Raiders a 34-28 lead.  Two more threes, this time by Grant Benzinger, extended the margin to 12 before the Titans hit a three of their own in the final minutes to make it 42-33 at the half.

WSU shot 57 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including eight of 13 from behind the arc, while Detroit Mercy shot 46 percent overall and was four of 12 from three-point range.

UDM closed to within four at 64-60 with 8:25 to play, only to see Wright State answer with an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach

The Raiders continued their hot shooting in the second half, hitting for 54 percent overall and four of eight from three, finishing the game at 56 percent altogether and 12 of 21 from behind the arc.

The Titans, meanwhile, shot 54 percent after halftime to end up at 50 percent, but were just seven of 20 from three-point range.

Steven Davis led WSU with 22 points, 15 coming in the second half, while La Tulip added 14 off the bench and Benzinger had 12.  Three other Raiders had nine points each in Parker Ernsthausen, Justin Mitchell and Mark Alstork.

Wright State (10-5, 1-1 Horizon) hosts a pair of league games next week, taking on Cleveland State on Thursday, January 5, at 7:30 and Youngstown State on Saturday, January 7, at 4:00.
