The Wright State baseball team defeated Xavier 4-1 in its home opener Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the first. With one out, Mitch Roman singled to right and after moving up to second on a wild pitch scored following back-to-back hits by Ryan Fucci and Gabe Snyder. Peyton Burdick then drove in Fucci with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Raiders added another run in the third as Snyder walked, went to third as Zach Weatherford reached on an error and came in on a Brandon Giltrow sacrifice fly.
Xavier tallied an unearned run in the fourth and it stayed 3-1 until Wright State rounded out the scoring with a run in the seventh. Roman walked, stole second and scored as Burdick singled down the right field line.
Trevor Swaney (2-1) picked up the win by not allowing an earned run in four innings, striking out three. Mark Meyer, E.J. Trapino, Logan Blair and Jack Van Horn blanked the Musketeers over the final five innings, giving up just three hits. Van Horn earned his third save of the season by pitching the ninth.
Roman finished with two hits and two runs scored to lead the Raider offense while Burdick drove in two.
Wright State (7-6) visits crosstown rival Dayton for a 3:00 contest on Friday, March 11.
