The Wright State baseball team won its second straight Joe Nuxhall Classic title and head coach Greg Lovelady picked up career win #100 as the Raiders shutout Miami 4-0 Wednesday night at McKie Field in Oxford.
For seven innings, starters Trevor Swaney of WSU and Brad Schwartz for the RedHawks hooked up in a scoreless pitcher's duel. Swaney allowed just two hits while striking out five while Schwartz gave up no hits and three walks while fanning four.
The Wright State offense, however, came to life in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Brad Macciocchi led off with the first hit of the game for the Raiders, a single to left center, and after Matt Morrow walked, John Brodner reached on an error on a bunt attempt to load the bases.
A JD Orr sacrifice fly made it 1-0 and a fielder's choice off the bat of Mitch Roman added another run. After Ryan Fucci was hit by a pitch and he and Roman each stole a base, Daniel Arthur delivered a two-run double down the left field line.
Swaney (5-1) retired the side in order in the eighth and Zane Collins pitched a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout.
The win gave the Raiders their second consecutive Classic crown and fourth overall, having previously won the tournament in 2012, 2013 and 2015. It was also the #100 career victory for Lovelady, who is 100-49 in his third season at the helm.
Wright State (22-10) faces another Mid-American Conference team this weekend in the Toledo Rockets. WSU and UT will meet in single games on Friday (6:30) and Saturday (2:00) at Nischwitz Stadium, with the series finale set for Sunday at Toledo (2:00).
